‘Who could have foreseen this’ BULLSHIT—Whenever COVID inevitably surges again, I DO NOT WANT to hear @CDCDirector or state/local health official (who dropped masks & mitigations) try to claim—“Oh there was no way we could have seen it coming” EVER AGAIN DAMNIT. #CovidIsNotOver👇
2) Time & time again, countless idiotic health officials and self-proclaimed “experts” have claimed COVID is over because cases dropping, herd blah-blah, vaccines enough blah, no need for N95 blah blah, cases don’t matter blah blah, long COVID not real blah blah… I’m sick of it!
3) Whenever you see total cases dropping, it can actually hide a slower undergrowth of a new variant—which we are seeing now with #BA2. BA2 is causing havoc in Asia (Hong Kong, S Korea, Singapore) and in UK 🇬🇧 where hospitalizations also surging again.

Figure by @GosiaGasperoPhD
4) so how real is the rise in #BA2? Well it’s rising steadily. Now over 11% across US. But it’s 24% in New England region already. See detailed thread 🧵

5) I have legitimate suggestions too. We need to do:

Boosters (not enough have it)
N95 masks
Ditch plexiglass theater
HEPA filters for schools & work rooms
Corsi filter boxes
Upper room UV for larger conf rooms
Mass testing
Isolate cases + 2x testing to exit
Don’t gaslight
6) When the data is screaming at us what will likely come soon— why don’t we ever listen??? We have never dodged any wave that has hit 🇬🇧 first… let that sink in. It’s only a matter of time in the US.
7) Leadership failure by so many countries during the pandemic is among the most painful to watch as an epidemiologist. We are nearing 1 million confirmed Us #COVID19 deaths. So many failures, so little time…
8) Leadership is just part of it. SELFISH human nature and the lack of EMPATHY is a huge part of the problem behind pandemic as well… I walk folks through the empathy gap and why we need to rethink COVID framing… see thread 🧵 below 👇
9) don’t forget - it’s not just hospitalizations—it’s long COVID with infections too. And half of #LongCOVID in one study were in this with mild illness originally.

NEW—NIH funded study of 1.1 million students & 160,000 school staff concludes:

💡"Universal masking was associated with a 72% reduction in secondary transmission” versus optional/partial masking.

📍So, #Masks help prevent #COVID19. Protect kids please.

2) The study included 61 school districts (kindergarten through grade 12) that provided data from July 26, 2021, through Dec. 13, 2021, a period encompassing the Delta surge and preceding the Omicron surge.
3) In total, there were 40,601 primary infections acquired in the community (36,032 among students, 4,569 among staff) and 3,085 secondary infections acquired in school (2,844 among students, 241 among staff).

Ever wonder why kids don’t get smallpox vaccine anymore? Because we once decided to eradicate it with #vaccines & 100% containment—& fully EXTINGUISHED smallpox off the face of the Earth 🌍. ➡️ We chose to go **ZERO SMALLPOX** because 500,000,000 deaths in 100 years was enough!! Image
2) So, was the smallpox vaccine some magical miracle 100% efficacy for a lifetime efficacy protection? No, it was 95% and for only 3-5 years, with waning after. It had to be used with contact tracing & village lockdowns to eradicate it—a PLUS strategy. health.ny.gov/publications/7…
3) The eradication of smallpox was no small feat. It took 10 full years to extinguish smallpox off the face of the planet. It was led by the legendary DA Henderson of @JohnsHopkinsSPH @CDCgov and @WHO.

His obituary was epic—by the great @HelenBranswell. statnews.com/2016/08/21/d-a…

Fine— I’ll say it aloud—Ukraine had a 60% positivity for #COVID19 in mid February, and just before the invasion on Feb. 24, only 35% of Ukrainians were vaccinated. It just makes me sad & worried, that’s all.

📍“War is an infectious disease’s best friend”. time.com/6153254/ukrain…
2) Ukraine’s relatively low vaccination rate could have implications for how large additional surges of cases, both in the country and in the region become as a result of the war.
3) Like many other countries, Ukraine experienced a surge in cases due to the Omicron variant in November and another peak in the first week of February—most likely due to its low level of vaccination.

Ukrainian 🇺🇦 children are being sent to school wearing stickers indicating their blood🩸 type, but do go on about kids wearing a mask.😠

Children’s hospital bombed today, meanwhile… 👇
Bombing kids hospitals and civilians is war crime. Want to know what else is a crime against humanity and public health? COVID policies to allow mass infection!
I’m gonna say bombing a maternity hospital is most a war crime…

⚠️BAD TREND—
📌Cases of #COVID19 soaring—across all ages in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
📌Meanwhile #BA2 is soaring past 50%—across all regions of 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 (data even 2 weeks old)
📌Meanwhile, hospital admissions soaring across all 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 regions
📌Cases up⬆️ most among kids

HT @VictimOfMaths ImageImageImage
2) Hospital admissions for COVID in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 have soared 21% compared to last week. These are 7 day averages so they aren’t just random flukes.
3) #BA2 is not mild among unvaccinated and under-vaccinated populations. In Hong Kong 🇭🇰 where BA2 is very dominant, hospitals and morgues are overflowing. Hong Kong has never had a surge of this kind before - not until #BA2 showed up
