Russian and Ukrainian authorities must ensure that members of the press can cover the war in Ukraine safely and freely, and Russian forces must refrain from targeting journalists.

Since late February, Russian troops have injured at least three journalists from international outlets, and at least one reporter for a Ukrainian outlet has been attacked for their reporting.

On February 28, Russian soldiers fired on a @SkyNews team near the village of Stoyanka, in the Kyiv region.

The journalists shouted that they were press as soon as the attack started and were wearing press vests.

On March 6, Russian troops shot at and robbed Swiss journalist Guillaume Briquet near the village of Vodyano-Lorino, in southern #Ukraine’s Nikolaev region.

The soldiers shot Briquet’s vehicle four times, despite it being clearly marked as “Press."

On March 7, an unidentified man attacked Dmytro Replyanchuk, a reporter for the Ukrainian outlet @Slidstvo_info, while he was reporting at a monastery in Kyiv.

Other men at the scene tried to snatch Replyanchuk’s camera and shouted at the journalists.

The nationwide antigovernment protests that erupted earlier this month in Kazakhstan upended the country’s reputation as one of Eurasia’s most stable authoritarian regimes.

They also posed an enormous challenge to Kazakh journalists, reports @nickjlewis.

Bangladeshi reporter Ruhul Amin Gazi has been jailed for over a year without trial because a 2019 report published by his employer, the Daily Sangram newspaper, was available on the internet, triggering a criminal complaint under the Digital Security Act.

In September, Nusrat Shahrin Raka told her brother, Bangladeshi journalist Kanak Sarwar, that someone created a Facebook account impersonating her.

That fake profile landed Raka in jail – a move Sarwar believes is in retaliation for his work.

Kanak Sarwar worked as a journalist in Bangladesh for more than 20 years before he fled in 2016 after he was detained for nine months.

In October, #Bangladesh police detained his his sister, Nusrat Shahrin Raka, who remains behind bars.
