British citizen @alaa AbdelFattah, a prominent activist jailed and tortured in a maximum security prison in #Egypt, has bid goodbye to his family as he enters the 2nd month of a hunger strike demanding a consular visit. His family fear for his life (THREAD) independent.co.uk/news/world/mid…
2. Since 2019 Alaa not been allowed books, exercise, to know the time, to see the sun. He has been banned from sending letters to his family & from receiving a bed sheet and a t-shirt. He has only drunk water and rehydration salts since April 2 when he started the hunger strike
3. He has spent most of the last 10 years behind bars & is currently serving a 5year sentence following a trial labelled a “sham” by rights groups. He was convicted on charges of spreading false news after he shared posts that were critical of terrible prison conditions in #Egypt
4. His sister @Monasosh told me he said goodbye as he is worried his body will fail as he goes into complete isolation over the next month, now letters are banned and/or the guards “will take advantage of the fact that he is in complete isolation to use extreme force, torture”
5. Alaa sent me a message from jail,he seemed to express suicidal thoughts. “In 2011 there was a prisoner held with me who had both hands broken from torture &was in excruciating pain.Even though he was about to be released,he threw himself out of the window. This is how I feel”
6. Alaa is a British citizen-as is his family-they’re worried if his treatment worsens, if he can’t secure a consular visit, this sets a “worrying precedent” for British citizens in Egypt. Under Egyptian & British law you’ve the right to a consular visit independent.co.uk/news/world/mid…

This disabled Syrian refugee boy promised resettlement in UK in 2018 has died waiting to be transferred while living in awful conditions in Lebanon. I raised his case with @ukhomeoffice multiple times as did his UK lawyers. His case is not unique (THREAD) independent.co.uk/news/world/mid…
2. The little boy’s family repeatedly warned they could not afford to pay for his full medical care for cerebral palsy or food or clothes or warmth - they live in Lebanon in the grips of the world’s economic collapse. Food and medical costs have risen five and six fold in an year
3. They told me in December they were forced to scavenge through bins to find food or live off herbs+ oil. I have raised their case with the Home Office 4 times. Their lawyer at @DuncanLewis has too. Even after the boy died in February they are *still* waiting for a transfer date

The government has condemned #refugees who cross the channel by boat saying they should apply through safe legal routes. But @maybulman & I found out 2000 refugees promised resettlement by the UK years ago have been abandoned in appalling conditions independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi…
2/ At least 460 of those promised resettlement live in #Lebanon that’s in the grips of one of the worst economic collapses in modern history. Among them are Syrian refugees who told me they are forced to forage in dumpsters for food, face eviction &can’t get life-saving medicines
3/ 2 families I met were promised resettlement in 2018 but nothing has happened. One has 2 severely emaciated children with cerebral palsy. They have to borrow money to pay for medicines to keep them alive. The other can’t afford the medicine or nappies for her disabled daughter

This footage being shared from Tel Aviv is insane (it’s not mine so can’t verify it). Reports of 130 rockets being fired from #Gaza at Tel Aviv right now
Over 80 rockets were fired toward Tel Aviv from Gaza, the spokesperson for Israel’s police Mickey Rosenfeld just told me.
There were two hits, one hitting an empty bus in Holon and one on Rishon LeTsiyon, both south of Tel Aviv. “Security is at the highest alert” he said
After tonight’s unprecedented (out of war time, can I say that?) rocket barrage on Tel Aviv I cannot see how this will de-escalate any time soon. I am so very worried about the coming weeks.

Rocket fire has been almost constant in Ashkelon -third time diving for cover in 10 mins. But at least there is a warning siren and cover here. In Gaza families don’t have warnings or anywhere to hide and the death toll shows that. Civilians on both sides are terrified.
Meanwhile footage coming out of Gaza is horrific. Screaming children with missing limbs, crying for their parents. The video is too graphic to share.
#Gaza health ministry officials just told me latest death toll in #Gaza is still 26 dead and 122 injured. Among the dead are 9 children.

Massive massive explosion just rocked #Lebanon. We are in the mountains and heard first explosion then the blast wave which literally pushed us fall to our knees. No idea. But there is massive mushroom cloud.
Absolute chaos in #Beirut. Shattered shop fronts, injured people staggering around, alarms going off, ambulances trying to get to hospitals, the floor is glistening with shattered glass. In all my years of covering wars I have never experienced a blast like this. #Lebanon
My flat is completely destroyed. Not just windows blown in- like door and window frames ripped out. The cats are alive thank god.

Exclusive: "Serious structural problems" in #Israel's military mean "masses of targets" in #Gaza are bombed without proper intelligence evaluations killing&maiming civilians, personnel told me. They said intel is often old, there's no visual check before (1)independent.co.uk/news/world/mid…
2. The #Israel airmen told me a culture of “destroy, destroy, destroy” rewards personnel for identifying fresh targets in #Gaza rather than checking the validity of 1000s already in the database, known as the “bank”. Sometimes the intelligence is over a year old. #Gaza
3. #Israeli airmen said if the targets in #Gaza run out, as happened during the 2014 war, the air force is told to “simply keep dropping bombs”. It got to the point in 2014 where personnel were questioning why the operation was continuing "because the target bank was finished"
