Even though of course not perfect, the report sets a new global benchmark for transparency, depth of information and analysis. Absolutely essential for any informed societal debate on this important issue. 3/x
The report looks at all reported cases between July 2018 and June 2021. As always it is essential to understand the separation between investigated and confirmed cases. Investigated but not confirmed means initial suspicion was not confirmed through detailed investigations. 4/x
Investigations can take years sometimes sp there will always be a larger number of open and ongoing cases. In the end, only the confirmed cases provide a baseline. 5/x
In the time-frame of the report, 860 cases were assessed (out of 355,100 total personnel). For 327 (38%) cases concrete evidence for potential extremist attitudes and actions was found. 6/x
What did these people dolomite actually to warrant this classification? For example participate in extremist events or chatgroups, making extremist statements, having personal contacts to known extremists (among other). 7/x
Where are they located? As you can see, broken down by state and absolute number mostly in the south western states. 8/x
Relative by size of the states' agencies, picture is a bit more even. 9/x
Report also did a comprehensive network analysis to explore if and how extreme right networks in security agencies exist and how the look like. As you can see, identified personnel had mostly connections to "legal" or subcultural forms of the extreme right. 10/x
More than half had only connection to one organization. 11/x
Regarding extreme right chatgroups, more than half of cases were only member in one of such a group. 12/x
More worrying though: From the personal extreme right contacts of identified personnel, more than half came from violent extreme right background. 13/x
Just a small snapshot from the main findings of the report, which also includes a list of #PCVE measures taken by federal and state authorities. Overall, the report shows significant development and progress regarding a) identifying and reporting such cases to the public, 14/x
and b) coordinating activities and strategies to prevent and counter this threat. 15/x

Absolutely massive breaking news from #Germany: In one of the largest police raids aginst extreme right milieu in German history, 3000 officers began searching 137 objects im 11 states this morning. 51 suspects and 25 arrests so far. 1/2 bit.ly/3HiHQWy
The group is mainly part of the #sovereigncitizen#Reichsbürger milieu and is alleged to have formed a #terrorist organization with the aim to attack German parliament and overthrow the government. Also, several former army officers of special forces were reportedly involved.
More completely insane information in the press statement of Federal Prosecutor General responsible for the investigation. 1) group majorly influenced by #QAnon! Would be the largest QAnon terror group/plot worldwide as far as we see it. Truly massive.
Neo-Nazis praising the Taliban? Islamists sharing extreme right memes? "Former" neo-Nazis talking "national Bolshevism"? There's much interest in the convergence between extreme ideologies lately. Time for a thread since the cover of "From Traitor to Zealot" has arrived!
"From Traitor to Zealot" will be out in November by .@CambridgeUP as the first indepth exploration of extremist side-switching and the ideological highways connecting usually hostile milieus based on over 50 extraordinary life stories. For the details: bit.ly/3l7l4nH
In the past, few scholars and journos have looked at what has been dubbed "salad bar" ideologies or "fluid fringes". Let's start with highlighting previous research and reporting to get you up to speed.
Tomorrow, trial against German #army 1st lieutenant Franco A. will start. He is charged with plotting a false flag extreme right #terrorist attack. It is one of the strangest and most shocking cases involving active duty #military personnel and far right terrorism. Short thread.
Before zooming in on this case, here is a background reader on the history of far right #extremism and the #military in Germany, the UK, the US, and Canada we wrote for .@ICCT_TheHague in September 2019: bit.ly/3ov9tQI
Franco A. was arrested February 3, 2017 at Vienna airport by Austrian authorities while trying to retrieve a gun he had hidden there earlier. He was an active duty 1st lieutenant in the German army then. He was let go. However, Austrians informed German military intelligence.
For the 1st time, German military intelligence published its now annual report on extremism within the Bundeswehr. Highly important source of information. Some key takeaways in this short thread. Download the report here: bit.ly/3fq1FuI
In 2019, 482 new investigations into potential cases of extremist soldiers were started. This is a high number compared to previous years.
In 2019, 14 individuals were confirmed as extremists (category red). 8 of those were right wing extremists. The larger group of cases (category orange) in 2019 was 38 persons strong. Those are persons with credible concern that they might be extremists.
Today the German federal annual intelligence report 2018 was released. The report belongs to the most important resources on #extremism and #terrorism in #Germany. You can find the full report online here: bit.ly/2IR48QE following #thread will give you the essentials.
Right-wing extremist crimes in 2018 among others: 6 attempted murders, 938 assaults, 11 arson attacks. No explosive attacks or completed murders. Increased in assault, robberies and violent resistance against arrest. Decrease in arson and explosives.
Still: 1,088 #xrw violent crimes in 2018. That's almost 3 per day. Most attacks directed against foreigners and left-wingers.
1/x So the following #thread breaks down a story unfolding in #Germany in the last days, which as become too strange and awfully relevant, as not to bother you all with it. It quickly turned into a political-legal-media-#XRW shitshow with quite many angles.
2/x So what happened? A week ago a tv crew from a public media station wanted to film during a #PEGIDA rally in Saxony. Yes, they still exist but rarely hit the national news anymore. As they filmed some participants, one if them started to verbally assault the crew.
3/x He claimed that filming him without consent would be a crime. He went to bystanding police officers and complained. That in turn led the police to hold the press team for about 45 minutes. The reason for that is still debated.
