#Thread On #Stolen #Artefacts

Todays restitution of 10 stolen artefacts to Tamil Nadu is an historic occasion and is the result of a complex global investigation arising out of work done by a citizens activist group - The India Pride Project.

1
Each of these restitutions were complex cases and the lessons from these will yield results for future restitution cases not just for Tamil Nadu but for other States and countries.

Though these 10 objects are returned from two countries - America and Australia,

2
each of them are unique cases starting from when they were stolen from India, smuggled out and eventually landed up in some of the most prestigious museums and collections there.

The case of the Chola Bronze Nataraja stolen from Punnainallur in 1971 - was not a

3
perfect crime but has since shown up the lacunae and loopholes within our judicial and criminal process when it comes to combating antiquities trafficking. The temple trustees promptly reported the theft of 4 bronzes incl the Nataraja but the case was hushed up by

4
giving them replacement icons and the FIR was closed. Hearing about the crime during an agamic conference in 2018 one of our volunteers reached out to us and helped us track a pre theft photograph of the original Nataraja - once we had it, it was a simple case of

5
matching it to the Asia Soceity Museum in Nyc and proofs submitted by us to the ASI and the Nyc District Attorney's office. However, the year of theft being so close to the 1970 UN Convention and the replacement icons were dampners which the other side tried to use

6
against the case for India. However, going by the concept of common law that a stolen object continues to be stolen object and that we could trace the original noting in the temple asset register on the actual date of the crime and image matching the actual artefact

7
the NYC Deputy DA Col Mathew Boggdanos and his team could ensure the Nataraja returned to India. We are currently working with the village committee to appeal to the TN state government by submitting all the proof that the temple has a robust security system incl a strong

8
room and CCTV cameras for safety and also how the temple in particular and village as a whole would rejoice at the homecoming of their Lord.

Similar is the case of the chola Alingana Murthy ( Shiva embracing Parvathi) - I first voiced doubts on the acquisition of the

9
Ball State Museum of the bronze in 2017 after noticing that the bronze has a tamil pedestal inscription that read "dipambalpurathu Sivigai Nayagar ". The Museum then disclosed that they had purchased the bronze from notorious smuggler Subhash Kapoor and made

10
public the provenance records which we could prove as fake with help from US Homeland security investigations aided by investigative reporter Mr Jason Felch. Ball State museum relinquished their tile and handed over the bronze to India.

11
The other 3 bronzes from America in this lost are also from raids as part of Operation Hidden Idol on various warehouses and storage locations of Art of Past Subash Kapoor's gallery in Nyc.

The main artefacts returning from Australia are the Chola Bronze Standing Sambandar

12
which was stolen from the Sayavanam temple in Sirkazhi in the 1960's not before he was documented by the French Institute in Pondicherry. The bronze was trafficked by self acclaimed smuggler dealer William Wolff and sold without any provenance information to the National

13
gallery of Australia. We managed to match the IFP archive image to the NGA exhibit and the restitution happened.

The case of Chola bronze Dancing Sambandar and the two granite door guardians - again acquired from Kapoor by the NGA were exposed when we could match

14
robber offering photos of Kapoor's suppliers revealed by the US homeland security investigations showing the icons freshly looted.

All these cases emphasise the need for documenting our icons which is the best way for us to solve these crimes while calling out

15
museums and collectors to do better due deligence while acquiring asian Art. The tamil Nadu police should also review their policy for grading police stations based on open FIRs and instead reopen those cases involving idol theft closed with the remark Idols not found.

16
The majority of todays returns are directly linked to temples and we submit our humble request to the Tamil Nadu Government to ensure they work with the temples to reinstate them in their original abodes.

Did u know this part of the history of #Kerala ?

It happened when the biggest and the most valuable company in the history of the world was brought down (among other things) by a royal Malayali from India.

1
There was a moment in history when the Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC) or simply the Dutch East India Company was the most well funded and powerful Business, military and naval force in the world.

2
Established in 1602, it had a virtual monopoly of the global spice trade for most of the 17th century and was the first truly multinational corporation in history.
It had a great run and was the Apple or Google of its day - only more successful, profitable-

During this journey of life, where do we put our attention and where should we put it.

Once upon a time, two men embarked upon a journey. They met each other during the trip, and while talking they discovered that both had the same destination,

1
so they started travelling together. After seven days of traveling together, when the time came for both of them to go their own way, one said to the other : "Brother! We have stayed together for a week, did you recognize who I am?" The other responded, "No, I did not."

2
The first traveler said : "Brother, I am a famous thief but you are an even greater thief than me. You turned out to be ten steps ahead of me."

The second traveller said "How so?"

First traveller : "I searched you continuously for seven days in the hope of finding

#Thread #NarendraModi Ji Foreign Visits

A woman who is working in the Indian Embassy in Germany wrote about Modiji in a post like this !

When #former #PrimeMinister #ManmohanSingh came to #Germany, he brought around 40 people with him who were his relatives.

1
A total of five hotels (all Five-Star) were booked for their stay.

All the relatives shopped in expensive Malls every day and bought things for lakhs and lakhs of Rupees.

The bills were charged in the name of the entire State Department.

2
This was the daily story throughout the currency of Manmohan Singh's tour

The entire Indian-staff servant of the State Department used to dance in front of them all.

Manmohanji did not come to the Embassy even once or met us.

#TIMEBANK. AMAZING #THREAD

A student studying in #Switzerland writes: While studying in #Switzerland, I rented a house near the school. The landlady #Kristina was a 67-year-old single lady who had worked as a teacher in a secondary school before she retired.

1
Switzerland's pension is very good, enough not to worry about food and shelter in her later years. However, she actually found work to take care of an 87-year-old single man. I asked if she was working for money.

2
Her answer surprised me: I do not work for money, but I put my time in the #timebank, and when I cannot move in my old age, I can withdraw it.

The first time I heard about this concept of time bank, I was very curious and asked the landlady more.

#IMPORTANCEOF #COCONUTOIL FOR #HEALTHYBRAIN AND #BODY

In the United States, an estimated 5.4 million people have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. This figure is growing rapidly with the ageing population.

1
One of them was Steve Newport. His wife, Mary Newport, was a doctor. Dr. Mary learned that her husband had severe Alzheimer's disease.

When the doctor examined her husband at the hospital, he asked Steve to paint a clock. Instead, he drew a few circles and

2
then drew a few figures without any logic. It was not like a clock at all!.

The doctor pulled her aside and said: "Your husband is already on the verge of severe Alzheimer's disease!"

It turned out that it was a test of whether a person had Alzheimer's disease.

By Arnaldo Liechtenstein, physician: "Whenever, I teach #clinical #Medicine to students in the fourth year of medicine, I ask the following question:

"What are the causes of mental confusion in the elderly?"

1
Some answer: "Tumors in the head".

I answer: No!

Others suggest: "Early symptoms of Alzheimer's".

I answer again: No!

With each rejection of their answers, their responses dry up.

And they are even more open-mouthed, when I list the three most common causes:

2
- uncontrolled diabetes
- urinary infection
- dehydration

It may sound like a joke; but it isn't.

People over 60 generally stop feeling thirsty and consequently, stop drinking fluids.
When no one is around to remind them to drink fluids, they quickly dehydrate.
