Remembering the #SixDayWar, #Egypt didn’t just lose #Sinai, it lost its progressiveness and opened the gate to #Islamism that slowly controlled its society like a cancer that is hard to uproot.
We regained Sinai, but until we regain our modernity, Egypt will continue to struggle

Immediately after the #SixDayWar, Islamists creeped in, claiming that we lost the war, not because of reckless Nasser, but because #Egypt became godless decedent society. They preached that victory will only happen when women wear hijab, and religiosity dominate! 2/

In 1971, Sadat didn’t just release many Islamists imprisoned under Nasser, he changed the constitution, asserting that Islam is *the* source of all legislations.
This *the* is what Islamists still use to argue for enforcing Sharia on society.

Sadat foolishly assumed he can control Islamists, but when he signed the peace treaty with Israel, which enabled Egypt to regain Sinai, Islamists consider it an act of betrayal of faith.
“Jews are enemy of God” has been their winning motto. No wonder they killed him in 1981

Following Sadat, came Mubarak, who decided to appease both Islamists & Nasser fans too, in order to survive.
During his tenure, Islamists were allowed to preach informally, while Nasser fans dominated cinema, art, and media too.
Both resented the progressive era of pre-1952. 5/

2011 offered #Egypt an opportunity to shake all its regressiveness and embrace a new ere, but sadly, it was a missed opportunity.
Although Islamism and Nasserism have been politically defeated, both have fans who still deluding younger generations of Egyptians 6/

Egypt has an opportunity to embrace a better future by properly reflect on its path, abandon populism in all its sorts and form, and embrace enlightenment, tolerance, and pragmatism, in order to shake the #SixDayWar legacy.
