In 1920, the "Nabi Musa" celebrations took place on April 4, coinciding with #Passover and the Greek Orthodox #Easter.
Amin al-Husseini, who was then at the beginning of his career, and Araf al-Araf stirred up the celebrating crowd with enthusiastic hate speech that day.
As a result, after the traditional prayer at the end of the holiday, the incited #Arab crowd marched from the mosque in the Judean Desert, 20 kilometers from #Jerusalem, to the homes of the #Jews in Old Jerusalem, shouting "Adbah al-Yehud" (Slaughter the Jews).
And a call that later turned out to be correct - "a-Daula Mana" ("The (British) government is with us").
The #Arab crowd shouted "Independence Independence" & sang: "#Palestine is our land - the #Jews are our dogs." During all this time, #Arab

1/ #ReshetKeshet. An entry for the food issues on #Passover

2/ The seder is a locus for many issues in the #DisabilityShulchanArukh, esp. for every kind of eating issue.

Firstly, the food: allergies, alcohol issues, diabetes, obesity, sensory overload (smells/taste/texture). It's key to know levels of obligation.
3/ The four cups are rabbinic commands for the purpose of (1) freedom (2) joy & (3) remembering the miracle. D'rabbanans are neutralized through a second leniency & esp. if it countermands the original intent of the command

So we can't force someone to drink that violates 1 or 2

37.03/ While I'm grateful that Coca-Cola has gone through the trouble to make their products kosher for #Passover, I cannot understand drinking Diet Coke willingly. Honestly, if unlabeled, I'd assume it was some drug-store's generic cola.

TL;DR: Diet coke is nasty.

Today is #TransDayOfVisibility and this roughly marks the one year anniversary of when we realized that our youngest child is #Trans. It’s been a steep learning curve for us accompanied by fear & anxiety about how to best support him in a world that is not yet accepting. 🧵:
First let’s talk about the terminology that even as a doctor I only fully learned this year. #Trans is an ☂ term: the experience of having a gender identity that is different from your sex or the gender assigned at birth, includes non-binary.
#Trans is an adjective. It is NOT a noun. You are a #transgender *person*, just like you are a smart person or a short person.…

The purpose of the #Passover #seder: A Mini-Thread

The purpose of the seder is to cultivate radical empathy for human suffering. It is to awaken to the pain of our enslaved and brutalized ancestors as we read the post potent words in the Hagadah-the Passover story:

Avadim Hayinu.

We were slaves in Egypt.

Not them.

This is personal.

We call upon our youngest children-the most vulnerable people in the room-to DEMAND from the adults seated around the table to answer their questions:

Why must we do this?

Why must we tell this story?

Why is this night different from all other nights?

My favorite picture from the Holy Land, & I've collected 1000s. What stands out about the pic, today in the day of #Corona?
I found it in the Lib of Congress, captioned "Children's procession, 1898-1946."
The pic was taken at the same time as the 1918 flu pandemic. Where? Why?
2/ With research, field trips, & my wife's suggestion, I discovered picture taken on Lag B'Omer, April 30, 1918. The kids were returning to the Old City after visiting the Tomb of Shimon the Righteous (Hatzadik), walking on Nablus Road.
Pic: Jewish women at the tomb, c. 1930.
3/ Lag B'Omer, bw #Passover & Shavuot, has deep Kabbalistic origins, but it is also the day the PLAGUE that killed 24,000 of Rabbi Akiva's students in 1st cen CE ENDED.
These children had just seen the end of the plagues of Ottoman control, starvation, cholera, typhoid, malaria.

As we prepare for #Passover tonight, surely it feels unique in our experience. This holiday is a classic example of families and friends gathering together, literally being close. Now, we have to stay apart. #StayHome (1/6) Image
My own family will be no different, with a zoom seder among grandparents, siblings, nephews and nieces, isolating ourselves all over the place. (2/6)
Ironically, we face a plague today not so different than those our story says God inflicted upon our Egyptian overlords so many centuries ago. The story of the Ten Plagues on Passover seemed superstitious and primitive. Yet here we are, being laid low by a simple virus. (3/6)

"Why is this night different from all other nights?" is the question Jews around the world will ask at their #Passover seder tonight, but with a different twist. During #COVID19, we must hold on to our connectedness, even when so many of us are a part from loved ones.
The arc of the Passover story--liberation from slavery in Egypt--has inspired not only the Jewish tradition, but just causes throughout the ages. For African American slaves, the Exodus narrative provided hope for the enslaved and gave rise to spirituals like "Go Down Moses."
The Puritans invoked the Exodus story when coming to America to flee religious persecution. And American Jews invoked this story to protest the Soviet Union's cruel treatment of Jews in the 1980s. Today, let us all be in solidarity in the fight for liberty and justice for all.

A #Passover parable for our times. The Torah speaks of 4 kinds of people who use Zoom:

The Wise
The Wicked
The Simple
The One Who Does Not Know How to “Mute”
The Wise Person says: “I’ll handle the admin feature controls and chat rooms, and forward the Cloud recording transcript after the call.”
The Wicked Person says: “Since I have unlimited duration, I scheduled the meeting for 6 hours—as it says in the Haggadah, whoever prolongs the telling of the story is praiseworthy.”

#Passover with the British army in Palestine 1918, 1919.
I found these pics in Harvard Library/Central Zionist Archives taken in 1918 and 1919.
These soldiers were serving in various units as individuals. Scandalously, the soldiers of the "Jewish Legion" were banned by GHQ.

2/ Several more pics of Jewish soldiers in Jerusalem. But from the various headgear, it's clear they were from several units, not from the Jewish Legion. The Legion's absence was blamed on the anti-Semitism in British high command.
