The 11 men who were serving life in prison for gang rape and murders during the 2002 Gujarat riots, are now free, Indian media reports. The men were freed on Monday after the state government approved their application for remission of sentence. 
The state says their application was considered because of the “completion of 14 years” in jail. Life sentences in India typically carry a 14 year jail term.

Bilkis Bano was gang raped and her three-year-old daughter killed. Thirteen others were also killed during the March 2002 riots, Al Jazeera reports. Bano survived by pretending to be dead.
The All India Progressive Women’s Association (AIPWA) condemns the Gujarat government’s decision.
