Reflecting on prevailing #sexism and gender inequality in the resources sector at #diggersndealers forum, @FortescueNews FMG CFO Elizabeth Gaines spoke out against having work gatherings at skimpy bars:

‘I don't know of many women who want to walk into that environment.’
Gaines said

‘You’ve got to have venues that are far more appropriate ... and actually reflective of society as a whole. Not #objectification of one part of society, and the other part of society looking on.’

While you pack your bags, let me tell you something about myself 🙋🏻‍♀️
I am currently a Professor at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy & Astrophysics @IUCAApune in India, where I joined as faculty this year 👩🏻‍🏫
Women in astrophysics are still quite rare (I am the only female faculty in my institute) 🤷🏻‍♀️ So I also promote #genderequality 👫🏻 as a #rolemodel for #WomenInSTEM
The journey for me hasn't been easy either..but I have had many amazing experiences - traveling and relocating to new places, for work/pleasure, learning languages, exploring cultures.. i have lots of stories to share 😄

Gender equality discussions : An unpopular opinion. A lengthy thread but would urge readers to bear with me till the end.
Latest NCRB data - # of men who died by suicide is 2.5 times the # of women. 97,613 men died by suicide in 2019 alone.

(1/n)
While the nation is still busy with #SSR ,above data didn't find a mention in any visual medium. We see tweets by women pleading for help and blaming husbands, most of which are dismissed later as false accusations, but by that point, damage is done.

(2/n)
First suspect in any negative household experience is the male. While misandry catalyzes the suicidal trend further, it doesn't help us achieve a gender neutral society. This trend needs attention and analysis of causes & potential solutions to make society gender neutral

#Thread 1/11

A lot of the male bias are not Intentional, sometimes it is inherent as mindsets, historical trends & many a times simply because the #MensWorld forget to factor women.

#GenderEquality will start with collecting & analysing data about women. #tweet4bharat

#Thread 2/11

Data is fundamental to #DigitalIndia we are dependent on data to make critical decisions & allocate resources for economic development, health care, education, & public policy.

When you get an over-the-counter medication, it doesn’t tell you male and female doses — it says “child” and “adult,” and that adult is a man. It’s Reference Man.

How has Taiwan outpaced 🇯🇵🇰🇷🇨🇳 towards #genderequality?

📈SMEs, GROWTH +SKILLED LABOUR SHORTAGES

👩🏻‍💼 Employers amended sexist practices + recruited married women in management

⚖️ Hence lower wage gaps

✊🏻 Harnessing their economic strength, women mobilised under democratisation ImageImage
This book - by Wei-Hsin Yu - is the most rigorous comparative analysis I've read recently.

It's truly fabulous.

Carefully tests every different hypothesis (eg culture, ideology, social policy, sectoral growth composition).

Democratisation & activism is my minor addition 🙂
Despite very similar cultural backgrounds, contrast the percentage of women in parliament today:

10% - Japan
42% - Taiwan

Political scientists emphasise features of the Diet. I don't buy that. Personally, I'm much more persuaded by explanations centering on the labour market.

ASMR Director, Dr Lila Landowski @rockatscientist, on #IWD2020:
“As a neuroscientist, sometimes I think of how far we’ve come but how far we’ve yet to go. Up until 1966 women were expected to resign from their work when they were married... Image
...Ruby Paine Scott, one of the pioneers of radio astronomy, made her big discoveries because she was able to work thanks to keeping her wedding a secret...
...Today, 50% of science, tech, engineering med and maths graduates are females, but there’s just 16% of women in the top jobs. This is disappointing, because evidence suggests that diversity is great for productivity.”

#Law and #gender | Interesting #statistics : In #France, 66% of judges are women, despite only about half of the population being female.

#law #droit #justice #judges #courts #LawTwitter #AppellateTwitter #genderequality #socialjustice Image
Compare that to the U.S.: with roughly the same overall percentage of women in the population, only 34% of state court judges and 27% of Article III federal judges are women.
How 𝑑𝑜𝑒𝑠 something like this happen?

My guess? The way they're selected.

In state courts, almost all judges are elected (90%).

In federal courts, judges are appointed by the U.S. President.

Today is the launch of the Lagos #HeForShe campaign and at the event, I reiterated the fact that as men, we must ensure that women are not behind us but beside us, standing with us as equals. ImageImageImageImage
We can't solve societal problems with only one half of society. All hands must be on deck. This is a clarion call to the male gender to sign up to this initiative. We will continue to support women empowerment and work for the protection of women against violence. #HeForShe ImageImage
Lagos state remains wholly committed to tackling gender bias, discrimination and violence as well as empowering women to reap the benefits of gender equality.

1/ Why CSOs call on EU Member States to support increased funding to the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values Programme in the next #MFF

A thread 📣:
2/ Equality between men and women is a founding value of the #EU. Yet, gender inequality and gender-based violence are still widespread within the EU. In recent years, an increasingly organised, visible and well-funded opposition to women’s rights and gender equality has risen
3/ This backlash, combined with an overall undermining of EU fundamental values, a shrinking civic space and lack of funding for civil society, are threatening the progress achieved towards gender equality and hindering the work done by women’s rights organisations and defenders

At my tribunal the Judge welcomed live tweeting as a means of #openjustice . It was brilliantly done by @wwwritingclub. Someone didn't like something she reported and complained to @Twitter. Her account was suspended for 12 hrs. She wasn't able to live tweet from #FairCopJR
Someone also did not like that the women of Mumsnet were talking openly about the case and the individuals involved. They received ominous warnings about "reporting restrictions" and decided to take all the names out if the posts to be on the safe side mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_ri…
After clarification that there were no reporting restrictions they have promised to replace all the names.
