The UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of climate change @SRclimatechange has just dropped an *amaze-balls* report to the UN General Assembly, starting later this month. Governments will have to respond.

We are being confronted with an enormous climate change crisis of catastrophic proportions. It is happening now.

The result of a catastrophically inadequate response from historical emitters / developed countries.

The members of the Group of 20 account for 78% of emissions over the past decade. Noting: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Korea and USA are falling short

By contrast, the 55 most vulnerable economies have lost over half their economic growth potential owing to the #climatecrisis.

We are going in the wrong direction - towards 3C increase this century. Governments and corporations are adding fuel to the flames.

Subsidies for #fossilfuels are $500bn pa. Transport sector not taking action. We are cutting down 15 billion trees every year (& replanting 5!)

#Climatechange #lossanddamage is a litany of human rights impacts.

Adversely affecting billions of people and the ecosystems, natural resources and physical infrastructure upon which they depend. This number is rising dramatically.

3.3bn people live in countries with high vulnerability to climate change.

Gender, race, class, ethnicity, sexuality, indigenous identity, age, disability, income, migrant status compound vulnerability to climate change, exacerbate inequity and create further injustice.

It lists the flood, drought, displacement challenges faced by poor people on the frontline of #climate impacts and says:

Effectively, major emitting countries have abandoned their duty to cooperate in line with the principles of international cooperation

.@SRclimatechange recommendations include:
- Summit of the Future should deliver commitments to reduce global emissions by >55% by 2030
- establish a #fossilfuel financial disclosure mech for govts & business & finance institutions
- ban any further #fossilfuel mining

.@SRclimatechange recommends the General Assembly
- establish #lossanddamage finance
- with new funding based on #polluterpays incl:
- a #ClimateDamagesTax on the #fossilfuel industry + redirected #fossilfuel subsidies ++

.@SRclimatechange recommends #COP27 #UNFCCC
- establish an interim window to urgently fund #lossanddamage under @theGCF
- ask UNEP to create a #lossanddamage gap report.
