🚨Tenure Process Update 🚨 Reached another milestone last week! My department unanimously voted to support my promotion and tenure! This is the first of several hurdles – wonder how the tenure process works? 🧵1/x #AcademicTwitter @PsychChatter #AcademicChatter #CBTWorks
Disclaimer – this is the process for my university and it is very transparent (unlike other universities). My process started with several talks with my mentors and direct feedback from my chair. I was in a position where taking additional time for COVID was a possibility 2/x
I created my dossier (CV, impact/overview, research, teaching, and service statements) at the end of spring 2022. I received feedback on these documents from many mentors. These are given to the chair to send out to external letter writers. 3/x
We require 4x external letter writers. I made a list of potential writers and my area group made a list. We each got to rank order the writers from each other’s lists and two from each list were invited until 4 total agreed to write letters. This was terrifying! 4/x
The letters were due back in July for the writers. After learning they were positive letters, some of my anxiety was reduced (a tiny bit). I then had to finalize my dossier and update my statements/CV for the next review (things changed!). 5/x
Included in my final tenure packet were all of the above statements, my CV, all of my teaching reviews from both universities I’ve worked at, a funding report, P&T guidelines for the university and department, and any supplementary materials/awards. 6/x
From here, I submitted my final documents with the external letters to the promotion & tenure system on August 10, 2022. My department chair had a week to review this before moving it on to the department P&T committee. 7/x
The P&T committee (all tenured faculty in my department) had ~2 weeks to review my dossier, vote on promotion & tenure (two votes) and write a summary of their findings. That happened with a unanimous decision and I had 1 week to review & respond (I didn't given the decision) 8/x
I mention the review and respond because at each phase here I can submit additional information or a response to the decision. If someone were to have voted against my promotion, they have to give a reason (anon) and then I could reply. Same goes for each stage 9/x
Next up is the chair’s actual review and recommendation. My chair has 1 week to review the department vote and materials to write a letter on his view of my promotion case. Then I get to see it and respond if I would like to 10/x
After this, it goes to the college committee, which is made up of tenured representatives of each department in college. Here my dossier is presented and reviewed with a vote from the committee within a week. Before I see it, the Dean or designee reviews the decision 11/x
Again, I get to review this decision for a week and respond if I would like to. This will take me to the end of October. The Dean of the college has 3 weeks to formally review and write a recommendation. I review and can respond. 12/x
Next stop, the University Committee, an elected group of tenured professors with representative across colleges. This committee has 6-weeks to review all cases, vote, and write a review. I have 1 week to review and response 13/x
Now (this will be at the end of January) we are at the ALMOST final spot. The Provost! Here the provost has from the end of January until the beginning of April to review all of the cases for the year. For us, April 6, 2023 is the notification day. That has to be the end? 14/x
NOPE! Last stop, the Board of Trustees who will make the final approval in spring or summer (hopefully before start of fall). This is the final stop for approval. For a process that started over a year before! 15/x
So, if you wonder why some early career folks are feeling anxious, it may be that some of the evaluation processes in our field are very long! Many of my students had no idea the process, so I figured I’d share! I’m excited for those who are also on this path for 2022-2023! 16/16
Sorry this is so long but I've had a lot of questions about this recently!

🧵Ever wonder what therapists use for #Suicide prevention? We asked: therapists use current best practices (~90%) BUT ~40% of clinicians endorse contracts for safety, no-harm contracts, &/or no-suicide contracts (not good!) #MentalHealthAwareness link👇 1/7 #psychtwitter
We asked mental health (MH) clinicians & MH allies (teachers, #FirstResponders, peer support) what Best Practices (Crisis Response Planning & Safety Plan) & Contraindicated Practices (contract 4 safety, no-harm contract, &/or no-suicide contract) they use. 2/7
Mental health allies endorsed the Best Practices & Contraindicated Practices at lower rates than mental health clinicians. This leaves room for more training on best practices with a focus on removing interventions that don’t help. #PeerToPeer #PeerSupport 3/7
