A #thread to answer the question in this tweet from September 29 regarding the visit of @hms_albion to #Tripoli & why the event angered Libyans across the country & drew criticism from figures across the political spectrum.

1- From what I saw & read online, the anger was not directed at the visit by @hms_albion to #Tripoli per se. Visits by other navy vessels to #Libya from others states have taken place over the years. But the timing/optics of this visit were off & could have been managed better.
2- #Italy, #Russia, #UK, #Turkey, and #France to name a few have all had their navy ships visit #Libya since 2011 for various reasons/missions.
3- Anger appears to be triggered by the timing + type of Libyan officials invited by @UKinLibya to board @hms_albion. Invited persons incl. some of #Libya's most corrupt officials who few days prior to the navy ship's visits were outed in the Audit report for their #corruption.
4- Some of these officials included CBL governor Sadik al-Kabir whose photos onboard @hms_albion drew the biggest share of criticism. As CBL governor Sadik al-Kabir is seen to be largely responsible for the suffering of millions of #Libya.

6- Other officials included controversial Foreign Minister @NajlaElmangoush whose known for her lavish spending on luxury goods whilst Libyans struggle to secure essential health care and food for their families.
7- So, the anger was aimed at how @UKinLibya (cc - @Number10press @10DowningStreet) condones corrupt behavior & how they court individuals who are seen as corrupt, financiers of militias responsible for human rights violations & responsible for the overall suffering of Libyans.
8- Furthermore, the timing of the visit by @hms_albion couldn't be worse. The visit was seen as explicit support by the @10DowningStreet to the GNU/PM Dabiaba (at least this is how it is being used by al-Dabiaba & Co) at the most volatile time in #Libya's political crisis.
9- Another moment that drew criticism during @hms_albion's visit to #Tripoli was a comment made by @Moussa_kouni saying that the visit by the RN ship was a sign of stability & improving security - Kun made these comments when few hours prior & only 40km away a child was killed...
10 ... and 7 civilians were injured in clashes between two militias in al-Zawia both of which aligned with the GNU's Ministries of interior and defense.
11. In conclusion, the timing of @hms_albion's visit to Tripoli couldn't be worse, the optics that accompanied the visit generated much anger/criticism from the Libyan public as well as public figures ranging from Mahmoud Shamam to Abdulhakim Belhadj among others. #Libya
