I'm thrilled to see so much interest in the tactics, targets, and effects of #climate#activism since yesterday's Tomato Toss. Anyone wondering if it was a success, just look at the media coverage as evidence. A 🧵to answer ?s @Revkin@MichaelEMann@amywestervelt@borenbears
As I described to Shannon, the action at the National Gallery was just part of a broader wave of contention that is being motivated by the #ClimateCrisis. As the world heats up, many more will mobilize. I wrote about this process in @ClimateActionSN: link.springer.com/article/10.100…
It's great to see one of my articles getting attention (thanks @revkin and @MichaelEMann). To think about the broader range of tactics & how they work as part of a whole movement to affect social change, check out my recent book #AmericanResistanceamericanresistancebook.com
My point (and that of many who study #socialmovements) is that the process of combining more & less confrontational tactics is NOT unique to the #climate#movement and it has been studied for decades. I've written in academic and popular outlets about how this works.
Anyone who has read my work (beyond 1 article), knows that I see the radical flank as playing an important role in effective movements. My next book will document how it's working in the #climate#movement with interview and survey data from these "disruptors" (stay tuned)
If you're interested in the radical flank in movements, check out this overview (thanks @ScientistsX for tagging) from @JamesOzden! The flank pulls discourse and tactics and normalizes types of contention but more research is needed (as usual #sigh).
Yesterday, working with a team of 15 researchers, we collected data from the participants at the #MarchOnWashington. In the end, we collected data from 277 participants who were randomly sampled in the crowd a #thread 🧵 (photo by @stsumej )
However, our data on the #MarchonWashington show that participants were much more concerned about race-based health disparities (like #COVID) and race-based poverty than about police reforms (though they also got a good deal of attention). @SociologistRay
