#Riboflavin (#vitamin B2) versus #covid19?

A series of molecular docking studies (modeling of biological actions by computer) indicate that plain old cheap old perfectly-safe old RIBOFLAVIN inhibits critical #SARS_CoV2 #proteases -- thus acting as potential #antiviral compound.
By analogy: viral protease inhibitors are the basis of anti-#HIV #ART (anti-retroviral therapy) - drugs used widely to maintain disease-free, #AIDS-free life, albeit at a cost: $25-50K per year. Plus headache, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, and a dozen other crappy side effects.
Riboflavin, if it proves to be effective in humans, or even if it doesn't, would cost perhaps $25 (twenty five, not 25 thousand) per year, with no headaches, nausea or the rest of that rot. Just so you know.
There is only slight chance that the definitive human studies will be
done on it, and even if those studies are done and show clear efficacy, there is zero chance that it will be widely embraced and applied. No money, no status, etc. Clear evidence will be ignored. That's just the way of our world now.
Meanwhile, if you wanted to treat yourself with riboflavin, on the assumption that it MIGHT fundamentally block Sars-Cov-2, you could do so cheaply and safely. Not that I would ever ever EVER suggest that you engage in the pernicious and deplorable practice of self-medication. 🙃
With that intro, here are the papers:

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35194243/
"[some compounds] are quite unstable in binding to SARS-CoV-2 main protease, while riboflavin is comparatively rigid.... Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) could be interesting for the antiviral treatment of COVID-19."
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35578055/
"The study identified folic acid, benfotiamine, vitamin B12...and riboflavin" as "strong and stable" binders at critical sites. "These safe and cheap vitamins...could be valuable drugs for inhibiting SARS-CoV-2 entry into the host and replication."
(Item above mentions benfotiamine and fursultiamine -- both being fat-soluble forms of thiamine, vitamin B1. They are like "super-B1" in many respects. High-dose B1, preferably but not necessarily fat-soluble, is essential in any case to ameliorate neurological fallout of covid.)
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34601658/
"we identified amprenavir, cefoperazone, riboflavin, diosmin, nadide and troxerutin...as COVID-19 main protease inhibitors, [forming] a remarkable number of non-covalent interactions."
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32866780/
"Conclusion: We identified... riboflavin, fenoterol, cangrelor and vidarabine as possible agents for repurposing as inhibitors of S1:ACE2 interaction... [and] safe and effective inhibition of S1:ACE2 mediated entry of SARS-CoV-2 into the host cell."
Riboflavin, described as a "Potent Neuroprotective Vitamin", is also being studied for activity against other families of viruses, suggesting non-specific anti-viral activity. New Sars-Cov2 variants? Influenza A? Others? We don't know, but maybe.
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35889050/
But wait! There's more!
Riboflavin may be a *general* antimicrobial agent, not limited to viruses!
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35199072/
"riboflavin can inhibit or inactivate the growth of different pathogens including bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites"
And: anti-influenza activity mediated through microbiome effects:
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35722312/
I began digging in to all this riboflavin literature after @localrachel brought the following item to my attention:
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/14977995/
... which indicates yet another way in which riboflavin could relate to covid, sepsis being a pre-mortal syndrome of severe infection.
Warm thanks to @localrachel for this extremely valuable and novel tip. You should follow her. She is your Magnesium Connection. (Though I can be pretty good runner-up in that department.)
Other items by same group on riboflavin in sepsis and related:
PMID: 15189780
PMID: 15178375
PMID: 20430062
PMID: 16112685
Last one in particular emphasizes anti-inflammatory cytokine effects -- highly relevant to severe covid.
Remember: your doctor will never prescribe riboflavin, no matter how effective it is -- for several reasons, not least that he/she will never know about it. It is strictly a DIY affair.
And the #zerocovid/covidian crowd will never mention it, just as they never mention ANYTHING except masks, vaccines and air filters.
PS: related (and note up thread that B12 was identified as protease inhibitor as well):

Dig this: an attempt to systematically mine social media posts for #longcovid drug repurposing leads! Good idea. For at least hypothesis-generation (and sometimes more), data IS the plural of anecdote.
If the people lead, the "leaders" will follow? Maybe.
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
And what were the most-commonly mentioned substances?
1 antihistamines
2 famotidine
3 magnesium
4 vitamins NOS
5 steroids
6 melatonin
... also aspirin, niacin, vitamin D, beta-blockers, ivermectin, etc.
Methinks the people are smarter than the "leaders". The ppl are using what works, empirically, which is (as long as substances in question are safe) exactly what ppl SHOULD do in the midst of a crisis. Yes, that's right: self-treatment. Because your doc sure as hell won't do it!

Good chart to study: cost per MWh of #energy. Grey and orange balls are wind and solar; dark grey is gas; black is coal. Economic advantage of #renewables in most countries is stunning. Image

snippet:
"figure 1.7 [shows] how large the benefit is by looking at the weighted average country #LCOE for #solar #PV and #windpower deployed in 2021 compared to what we thought the marginal generation cost would be for fossil fuels in 2022.
Put simply, renewables received their biggest yearly improvement in competitiveness in history in 2022.... the bulk of the boost coming from the eye-wateringly high fossil fuel prices we're dealing with in 2022.

@calebmaupin This has nothing to do w/"degrowth policies", about which you are ignorant.

The immediate cause of Sri Lanka's food problem was the sudden abolition of nitrate fertilizer use -- an idiotic move advocated by no intelligent person, and certainly not by any degrowth intellectual.
@calebmaupin If Sri Lanka wished to *REDUCE* (not abolish) use of N fertilizers, fine, good idea. Reduce them by 10-20%/year increments while watching yields and other results carefully, and while introducing compensatory measures (e.g. legume cycles for N fixation) so as to avoid trouble.
@calebmaupin Do NOT attempt to reduce use to zero overnight, after the high-N regime has been in place for a long time. That is idiotic and risks disaster.

China has been investigating agricultural N fertilization requirements, finding that substantial excesses of N are often used without

Poor take from the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL).

1 They write of "absolutely essential health measures like fully vaccinating the entire population", ignoring the glaring fact that the PRC completely abolished covid in 2020 without a vaccine.
Same with Vietnam, which since starting vaccination went from zero covid to major covid problems. Similar trajectories have been evident in other highly-vaxxed countries like the U.S.: more cases and deaths since the advent of vaccination, versus before.

The GREEN PARTY endorses vaccine mandates!

Read their statement. It is telling that it is littered with signal phrases that indicate the writers have very little knowledge, and never bothered to study in depth (or perhaps even at all) before drafting it.

#GreenParty #GreenExit
Example:
"vaccines...protect our most vulnerable, such as children"

This is one place where vaccine hesitancy (minimally!) is well justified; for the risk, it would be crazy to mass-vaccinate children. Total all-time covid deaths, ages 5-11: **94**.
cdc.gov/vaccines/acip/…
Example:
"dispel mistrust and misunderstanding of vaccine science"

You do not have to investigate long before realizing that there is a great deal to mistrust in what we've been told about these vaccines, starting with the statements of leading politicians (e.g. Biden, "if you

Dear @ChrisLynnHedges:
Your famous remark - “We live in a nation where doctors destroy health, lawyers destroy justice, universities destroy knowledge, govs destroy freedom, media destroys information, religion destroys morals, and banks destroy the economy" - needs an update.
With the covid clusterfuck we have seen how:
-- Scientists destroy science
-- Pro-vaxxers foster anti-vax-ism
-- Public health authorities foster public ill-health
-- Human rights leaders deny human rights
-- Leftists enthusiastically advocate fascist policies
The covid clusterfuck has added new dimensions to your original remark, very very BIG ones, and has done so with incredible speed.

So it is all the more remarkable that you've chosen not to speak out about these things.
