STARTING NOW at #COP27 an essential event connecting the dots between patterns of racial injustice, inequality, and colonialism & #ClimateAction.

A thread 🧵
Racially, ethnically & nationally marginalized communities are more likely than other populations to be adversely affected by the primary drivers of the #ClimateCrisis (aka #FossilFuels & #Deforestation) & the measures to address climate breakdowns.
In particular, #FossilFuels not only drive the #ClimateCrisis; they also erode the resilience of fenceline & frontline communities to the ravages of climate change, through their impacts on the environment and public health, compounding climate vulnerabilities.
Communities of color & marginalized communities are more likely to live in proximity to polluting industrial facilities.
Just one example? Formosa Group targeted a Black community in Louisiana, already burdened by toxic pollution, for the buildout of a new petrochemical facility.
Read more about this in our report "Formosa Plastics Group: A Serial Offender of Environmental and Human Rights" 👇👇 ciel.org/reports/formos…
But marginalized communities are not only most directly impacted by the fossil economy 😱 & by the effects of #ClimateChange 😱. They are also at heightened risk of harm from certain responses to the #ClimateCrisis 😱 .
Experimental or speculative technologies proposed in response to climate change, such as #CCS, #CCUS & solar geoengineering not only distract from proven solutions but also introduce significant new risks to frontline communities already overburdened by envt’l harms & injustice.
Moreover, the existing international #ClimateChange framework lacks effective #Remedies while developed countries keep blocking demands of the most vulnerable countries & communities for anything resembling compensation & reparation for climate harm.
‼️ Environmental & climate justice is not possible without the collective defense of the inherent value and dignity of all people, and an end to white supremacy, racism, and colonialism around the world. ‼️
Former UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance, Tendayi Achiume, said just that: there can not be #ClimateJustice without #RacialJustice.

"It's essential that racially, ethnically & nationally marginalized communities can meaningfully participate in climate spaces, reclaiming their right to development at their own pace", @MSalimu from @wedo.
.@IENearth's Panganga Pungowiyi reminded the audience & policymakers at #COP27 that #NetZero & geoengineering are false climate solutions that come at the expense of #IndigenousPeople & their lands.
No real climate solution can be found in experimental & speculative technologies.
"A better world is possible, but it'll only be possible if we address the climate & the environmental crisis while ending white supremacy, racism & colonialism," John Beard from the Port Arthur Community Action Network, which is fighting petrochemicals facilities in the Gulf 🇺🇸.

Forests play a vital role in:
🧯 Mitigating #ClimateChange,
🐿️ Protecting biodiversity, and
🫒 Supporting the lives and livelihoods of #IndigenousPeoples and forest-dependent communities.
The ability of forest ecosystems to fulfill these critical functions is increasingly threatened by deforestation and forest degradation.
Curbing illegal logging and #TimberTrade is a critical but neglected component in addressing global deforestation.
"Let me be clear: If this COP does not extend the commitment to phasing out fossil fuels beyond coal, to include oil and, critically, GAS, it’s a failure. Full Stop,"— CIEL's @NikkiReisch.
"We want to call out the hypocrisy of developed counties’ who are stalling to bring solutions for the #ClimateCrisis. What is lacking is political will & courage” @ninteretse, @350Africa.
#COP27: In the wee hours of this morning, @COP27P released a new, lengthy, draft decision text.
The cover decision is the COP's political signal to the world in response to the #ClimateCrisis.
A draft dropped around 06:30 local time and it has ballooned from 2 pages to 20, an unusual choice (and it is a choice) by the @COP27P with 36 hours left, making it FAR harder for civil society to have a voice in influencing the final decision.
Ironically (not really 😱)the text includes the 1.5C target & references to science but then doesn't follow what experts & academics have been saying for years: #FossilFuels are the biggest threat to 1.5C & ALL fossil fuels must be phased out rapidly to address the #ClimateCrisis
It’s #Biodiversity day at #COP27.
🌴 Deforestation is a leading cause of climate change, second only to #FossilFuels.
🌴 #Forests play a vital role in protecting #Biodiversity and supporting the lives and livelihoods of communities and animals.
Illegal logging & timber trade is a key driver of deforestation.
In order to address these drivers and protect forest ecosystems, there is an urgent need to ensure that national and international safeguards and laws are strong and well-enforced.
That's why, this week, we are at #CITESCoP19, the 19th Conference of the Parties of @CITES, (a Convention that regulates the trade of endangered species) to work with partners and governments to further strengthen the Convention and meaningfully protect forests.
There is one thing that doesn't seem to be clear for Parties at #COP27: The only “clean” oil, gas, and coal is the oil, gas, and coal we leave in the ground.
❗There is no fixing #FossilFuels, we need to ditch them ❗
We cannot decarbonize oil, gas & coal. We need to #Decarbonize the economy, by ending reliance on #FossilFuels.
Fossil fuel producers are falling over themselves to sell their products as the cleanest dirty energy around. Don't by their lies.
Carbon capture & storage (#CCS) cannot make gas green, oil clean, or coal climate-safe.
Ample evidence demonstrates that CCS is:
🔻 Unnecessary for the rapid emission cuts we need,
🔻 Unproven at scale,
🔻 Unjust for communities on the frontlines of fossil fuel extraction.
#Forests are a common good, and they benefit everyone.
Healthy, intact forests are essential for #Biodiversity, the climate, and Indigenous Peoples and forest-dependent communities around the world who rely on them for their lives, livelihoods, and cultural survival.
Protecting forests is essential if governments and institutions want to truly address the triple planetary crisis — #ClimateChange, #Biodiversity loss, & #Pollution — and achieve their global climate & environmental goals.
The onslaught of illegal logging, together with agricultural deforestation and climate-fueled wildfires, is destroying forests, affecting biodiversity, and turning forests from carbon sinks into carbon bombs.
