#COP29 begins tomorrow in Baku 🇦🇿 & we are already seeing an attempt to weaken effective climate action.

The #Article6o4 Supervisory Body adopted dangerous standards on methodologies & removal activities – now they might be rubber-stamped without any oversight by States .

A 🧵 Image #COP29 is expected to reach an agreement on carbon markets, which should be called out for what they are: a dangerous distraction allowing countries to trade greenhouse gas emissions “credits” rather than reduce emissions to help achieve climate goals.

What do Canadian start-up Planetary Technologies & the @EnvAgency have in common? A secret marine geoengineering experiment involving dumping magnesium hydroxide into the sea off the coast of Cornwall 🇬🇧.

A thread🧵👇
geoengineeringmonitor.org/2024/07/st-ive… In March 2023, the St Ives Bay community learned that Planetary Technologies had been secretly operating an ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) experiment in their beautiful Bay 🦭🌊 in an attempt to draw down #CarbonDioxide from the atmosphere and store it in the ocean.

‼️ Breaking‼️

The @EUCouncil just adopted the European Union’s proposal to leave the controversial #EnergyCharterTreaty, an international agreement protecting fossil fuel investments.

We celebrate this victory for people, the environment & the climate.

#ExitECT The cornerstone of the #EnergyCharterTreaty has been the Investor-State Dispute Settlement (#ISDS) mechanism that allows companies to sue governments through private arbitration courts if they pass or enforce laws that affect the companies’ investments.

Nearly 200 fossil fuel lobbyists registered for #INC4, outnumbering national delegations, scientists, and Indigenous Peoples at the #PlasticsTreaty negotiations in Ottawa.

🎥Watch Civil society and Indigenous Peoples’ reactions 👇 There is too much at stake at #INC4 to advance a #PlasticsTreaty. CIEL’s @rachelradvany tells us why it is impossible to ignore the power dynamics that exist in these negotiations and obstruct meaningful progress to address the #PlasticsCrisis.

🔎 A closer look at yesterday’s @BerkeleyLab report on #PlasticsAndClimate which reveals plastics are at the heart of #ClimateChange & undermine our ability to keep global temperature rise below 1.5°C degrees.
🧵bit.ly/3JmKpXg 🔑 Key Finding: If plastic production keeps expanding, it could account for nearly one-third of the Earth’s remaining carbon budget by 2050.

We need a #PlasticsTreaty that
🏭 Halts the buildout
❌ Limits and reduces plastic production
🧪Covers the full plastics life cycle

🌍 As #COP28 kicks off, @UNHumanRights experts call for an urgent & just phase-out of @FossilFuels, due to their severe negative impacts on #HumanRights & the #ClimateCrisis. 📰 Full statement:

A 🧵👇 bit.ly/3uLyrlY
@UNHumanRights @FossilFuels 🛢️#FossilFuels are the leading source of greenhouse gas emissions, driving the #ClimateCrisis. This year's record-breaking 57.4 gigatons of CO2-equivalent emissions threaten the #ParisAgreement's goal of limiting warming to 1.5°C. #ClimateAction

📢BREAKING!

Today is a BIG day for #ClimateJustice with not one but two critical developments at international institutions advancing efforts to clarify & enforce States’ #HumanRights obligations in the face of #ClimateChange.

Our reaction: ciel.org/news/historic-…

A thread🧵👇 The 1⃣ critical development is the first-ever public hearings at the @ECHR_CEDH on climate cases addressing the duty of states to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including a case brought by the @KlimaSeniorin against Switzerland.

Today is a landmark day for #ClimateLitigation, for #HumanRights & for #ClimateJustice.

For the 1st time, the @ECHR_CEDH is holding two public hearings in #Climate cases.

CIEL's @duycks is in Strasbourg 🇫🇷 attending the hearings, follow him for updates from the ground.

A🧵👇 What are these climate cases?

@KlimaSeniorin, @DamienCAREME & @Y4CJ_ are calling on the court to hold States accountable for not doing enough to protect their citizens from the impacts of climate change.

The 1st #LossAndDamage Transitional Committee (TC1) negotiations are in full swing in Luxor 🇪🇬.

Check out what happened in the first 24h of talks:

Here's a recap of our key demands for policymakers on how the future #LossAndDamageFund should work👇 States at #TC1 must focus on:
▪️Urgently get the #LossAndDamageFund up & running
▪️Center the Fund's design, scope & functions in #HumanRights.

That's the only path forward to quickly provide effective remedy to communities whose rights have been harmed by the #ClimateCrisis.

‼️ NEW ANALYSIS ‼️

Do you know that we breathe #Plastics too😱?

Today we released a new briefing analyzing the health impacts of invisible micro- and nano-plastics in the air: ciel.org/reports/airbor…

A short thread with key takeaways from the brief 🧵👇 Image 🥤Multiple sources, same origin: #Microplastics are ubiquitous in our environment, but they are mainly invisible. They can be intentionally produced or result from the fragmentation of larger plastics. They are part of the bigger #StoryOfPlastics, as they are a human creation. Image

Follow the live stream:

Here's a 🧵 on what #TC1 is about and why it matters👇 Image At the climate talks #COP27, States agreed to:
1⃣ Create new funding arrangements to address the impacts of #ClimateChange in vulnerable countries, incl. a #LossAndDamageFund
2⃣ Establish a Transitional Committee that will meet throughout 2023 to decide the details of this fund. Image

🚨 In the last hours at #COP27 Parties proposed a new agreement on #CarbonMarkets that does not include any meaningful references to #HumanRights & Indigenous Peoples rights & could undermine ambition & effective #ClimateAction.

🗣️ This text MUST BE REJECTED. 🟢The good: The recommendations on #Article6o4 (carbon markets) will be sent back to the #SupervisoryBody with a request for more stakeholder engagement BUT this will be the same body tasked with the same mandate that came up with a very bad decision at the beginning of #COP27.

#COP27: In the wee hours of this morning, @COP27P released a new, lengthy, draft decision text.
The cover decision is the COP's political signal to the world in response to the #ClimateCrisis.

👉unfccc.int/documents/6241…👈

Spoiler alert: it's NOT good.

A 🧵 with our takeaways👇 A draft dropped around 06:30 local time and it has ballooned from 2 pages to 20, an unusual choice (and it is a choice) by the @COP27p with 36 hours left, making it FAR harder for civil society to have a voice in influencing the final decision.

It’s #Biodiversity day at #COP27.
🌴 Deforestation is a leading cause of climate change, second only to #FossilFuels.
🌴 #Forests play a vital role in protecting #Biodiversity and supporting the lives and livelihoods of communities and animals. Image Illegal logging & timber trade is a key driver of deforestation.
In order to address these drivers and protect forest ecosystems, there is an urgent need to ensure that national and international safeguards and laws are strong and well-enforced.

There is one thing that doesn't seem to be clear for Parties at #COP27: The only “clean” oil, gas, and coal is the oil, gas, and coal we leave in the ground.

❗There is no fixing #FossilFuels, we need to ditch them ❗

#FossilsPhaseOut

A short 🧵 We cannot decarbonize oil, gas & coal. We need to #Decarbonize the economy, by ending reliance on #FossilFuels.

Fossil fuel producers are falling over themselves to sell their products as the cleanest dirty energy around. Don't by their lies.
