#Climate impacts are already costing us billions annually. Meanwhile, the Ford government ramps up fossil gas generation, pushes ahead with #Highway413 and the #BradfordBypass, and plans to pave over the #Greenbelt.
Tuesday's FAO report shows yet another massive bill is coming. More extreme rainfall will increase the cost of maintaining storm and wastewater infrastructure by a whopping $6.2 billion by 2030.
The FAO has previously calculated that climate-related costs to maintain transportation infrastructure will total $14 billion by 2030. Maintaining public buildings will add another $6 billion.
Ford’s inaction on climate will cost us an extra $26.2 billion this decade for damage to storm and wastewater infrastructure, transportation and buildings alone. And Ontarians are footing the bill.
I asked the FAO for this report because the people of Ontario deserve to know the dollar-for-dollar cost of this government’s climate inaction, and the risks we’re facing as a result.
Luckily, we have solutions. @OntarioGreens are calling on the government to:
1. Implement a real climate plan to cut carbon pollution in half this decade;
2. Invest in Ontario’s public infrastructure so that it’s climate ready;
