Thatโs because, in the 2016 #EUreferendum, the electorate was not sufficiently informed. On the contrary, we were grossly misinformed.
โก Legally, informed consent means that consent has been given with full knowledge of:
โช the risks involved,
โช the probable consequences,
โช and the alternatives.
โข During the referendum, we were not fully aware of all the risks of #Brexit.
โฃ During the referendum who really understood the "probable consequencesโ of #Brexit?
โค During the referendum, we were not told about the different #Brexit alternatives. #Brexiters were only given the option of one meaningless, undefined word: โLeaveโ.
โฅ This is why, one day, there will have to be a new democratic reconsideration of #Brexit.
โฆ And when we do get a new vote on #Brexit, we need the people to be properly informed, so that next time they can truly give their INFORMED CONSENT
โ Proof that voting for Leave was a vote for the unknownโฆ
Hereโs a question for you, I wrote in my report of February 2016: โ๐ช๐ผ๐๐น๐ฑ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐บ๐ผ๐๐ฒ ๐ต๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ ๐๐ถ๐๐ต๐ผ๐๐ ๐ธ๐ป๐ผ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ผ๐๐ฟ ๐ป๐ฒ๐ ๐ ๐ต๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ ๐น๐ผ๐ผ๐ธ๐ ๐น๐ถ๐ธ๐ฒ?โ
No, me neither.
But thatโs what those campaigning for Britain to leave the #EU were expecting voters to do โ vote to end our membership of the EU without knowing what weโd have instead.
The problem LEAVERS had is that they simply didnโt know, and for sure they couldnโt agree.
As a result, two rival, irreconcilable โLeaveโ campaigns were launched in the run-up to the referendum:
#UKIPโs leader, Nigel Farage, supported one (Leave.EU) and @UKIPโs then only MP, Douglas Carswell, supported the other (#VoteLeave).
โ The #EUreferendum was undemocratic. Many people directly affected were denied a vote.
Citizens living in the UK from over 70 nations could vote in the EU referendum, but most citizens living here from the rest of the #EU could not.
โก Including Britain, 55 countries across the world are members of the #Commonwealth, and all citizens from those countries resident with โleave-to-remainโ in the UK were granted a vote the #EUreferendum.
They included citizens living here from Australia, Canada, Ghana, India..
โข Just two #EU countries are members of the #Commonwealth, #Malta and #Cyprus, and citizens from those countries resident in the UK were able to vote in the #EUreferendum.
Lord @DavidGHFrost isnโt happy with the #NorthernIrelandProtocol that HE negotiated. He wants to โreturn to normalโ. Isnโt #EU membership โnormalโ? That avoided ALL the problems Frosty is griping about and it's what he supported BEFORE the #EUReferendum. Watch ยฝ-minute video.
Before the #EUreferendum, the then Mr @DavidGHFrost strongly supported the case for Britain to REMAIN in the #EU. He said then AGAINST #Brexit: โEven the best-case outcome canโt be as good as what we have now.โ
Yesterday, during a mammoth BBC TV interview, #DominicCummings said that anyone who was sure that #Brexit was a good idea had a screw loose. And then he went on to say that he thought Brexit was a good idea and was pleased that it had happened. Watch and share 1-minute video.
This time last year, #DominicCummings told an unbelieving nation that during the #Covid#lockdown he went for a drive just so he could test his #eyesight. Many of us then thought something was missing. Now we can be sure.
#DominicCummings had a lot to say for himself. But one question #LauraKuenssberg didnโt ask him is if he supports #democracy. Obviously, he doesnโt. He thinks itโs in his gift and power, not ours, not Parliamentโs, to make or break, appoint or unappoint, a Prime Minister.
