My favorite weekend binge-watch for the past 3 weekends.

The Unknown War, made in 1978 by Burt Lancaster — with the full cooperation of the Soviet Union — was a 20-part documentary about The Great Patriotic War against the #Nazis.

Well worth a watch!

The documentary was shown in both the United States (on @PBS stations) and the #USSR.

The above series is how it looked on Soviet TV (English version). ☝️
The story behind “The Unknown War” is as interesting as the documentary itself.

I tell the backstory in this thread.🧵 👇🏽
In 1978, many #WWII veterans and widows were still living.

This film was a love letter to them. All of them, all of the Allies — all over the world — to show our eternal gratitude.
This is a perfect film to watch before the @RageAgainstWar_ rally next weekend, if you need a reminder why we don’t want another world war.

This is the reality of war — as real as it gets.

How did Ukranian #Nazi collaborators and war criminals become regarded as “heroes” both in modern day #Ukraine and the entire Western world?

In this thread we will unpack the strange mythology Ukranians (and their Western intelligence handlers) created to cover-up their crimes. Image
This thread is sourced from a Graduate History Thesis published in October 2022 by Liam Hilferty, University of Vermont.

His thesis is 150 pages long. I will summarize it here with highlights and provide a link at the end for further reading.

Let us begin… 🧵 Image
Hilferty’s interest in writing his Graduate Thesis on the #NazisInUkraine began when he saw this tweet from the Russian Embassy of #Canada 🇨🇦 in Oct. 2017: Image

In this classic speech from the year 2000, author and researcher John Loftus talks about the shocking discoveries he found in top secret CIA files about collaboration w/ #Nazis.

This led to Congress passing the #Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act in 1998.
At 20 minutes, 45 seconds Loftus explains how the “Bush family fortune came from the Third Reich.”

Prescott Bush’s grandson, George W. Bush was running for president at the time.

Loftus’ book made the Bush campaign very uncomfortable 🥵 for a while… 📕
Loftus’ search into documents showing Nazi officers and sympathizers smuggled to the West as anti-communist informants led to his resignation from a federal Nazi-prosecution unit in 1981. That’s when he began his one-man probe into the government’s secret work w/ fugitive Nazis.

I apologize if I blocked anyone unintentionally. Been using Secateur app to block NAFO accounts and all their followers.

Just noticed that somehow, the app is blocking some good people that I didn’t mean to block!

I’m now trying to un-block those who got blocked by mistake…
For the life of me I still can’t figure out why pro-Russia accounts would be voluntarily following NAFO trolls or pro-Ukraine accounts, but somehow they got caught in the Secateur app mass blocking list. Sorry! Please don’t be offended! 🇷🇺
Crap! I’ve accidentally blocked several hundred of my favorite people… it’s gonna take a while to fix this, but am working on it!

Millions of German and Ukranian #Nazis participated in the horrors of #WWII — yet only a handful were tried at #Nuremberg.

22 defendants were charged with war crimes, and only 12 were convicted.

This documentary film explains why so few were tried.

Here is a list of the #Nazi defendants at #Nuremberg, and details of each case.

All were German.

The #NazisInUkraine all dodged the proverbial bullet.

In the subsequent #Nuremberg trials occurring between 1946-49, more #Nazis were tried and convicted.

An underwhelming 97 in all.

If you need a reminder (or know someone who does) of why #Russia invaded #Ukraine in the first place, my friend @tjmac87 is live-streaming #Putin's Speech from Feb 21 2022 right now, with an accurate English translation!

Tune in here 👇🏽

Here #Putin is tracing the roots of the current war, back to what he considers #Lenin’s fateful error:

Making concessions to the Ukrainian nationalists (who fought for an independent #Ukraine during the Civil War) when #Ukraine joined the #USSR in 1922.
From my own research into this period of history, Putin is absolutely correct.

Lenin should have known the types he was dealing with — evil monsters, out to destroy #Russia — after all he’d seen from them between 1917-21.

They’d be back 20 years later, w/ Germany’s backing!
