One of Fife's other claims in the Globe article as to how China interferes is that "undeclared cash donations" are given to political candidates or international Chinese students can "volunteer"! The problem is cash over $20 is not allowed.

Is that a CSIS error or a FIFE error?

Without checking whether China's or CSIS claims might be true, Fife just quoted CSIS doc that said: "Mr. Chiu’s loss proved “their strategy and tactics were good, and contributed to achieving their goals...."

While I acknowledge that fake news is spread in diaspora Chinese

communities via social media such as WeChat & WhatsApp, did it contribute to Chiu losing Steveston–Richmond East in 2021?

Let's look at stats. This was a new electoral riding in 2015 where Chiu lost with 38.5% to the LIB with 45.1% of the vote or by 2,856 votes & 43,225 voting.

In 2019, Chiu won by 2,747 votes over the LIB with a slightly lower turnout: 41,951 vs 43,225 in 2015.

in 2021, Chiu lost by 3,477 votes & turnout was lower yet so was it foreign interference or did other factors matter?

The polls showed LIBS possibly stealing older Conservative voters due to vaccination.

Noteworthy is that WeChat & WhatsApp appeals more to younger voters.

The Liberals were winning over older Conservative voters

Can anyone seriously claim China caused Chiu to lose a riding he had first lost in 2015?
