Nova Scotia College of Nurses is the regulator for #Nursing profession in the Province of Nova Scotia, #Canada and in coming weeks will be rolling out another 'first-in-Canada' Nursing Registration and Licensure Process - #CanadaNurses
It is in public knowledge that registration and licensure for Internationally Educated Nurses IENs in Canada is a tedious and difficult process with several bottlenecks.
This has led some provinces to start rethinking the process and find a way to streamline it so that it becomes seamless for applicants. Also, to ensure that IENs in Canada can function to the full extent of their education and competencies.
NSCN has therefore decided to focus on five (5) areas of the registration and licensing process to make intending IENs have a streamlined and less problematic experience.
1. More ways to meet the English language proficiency registration requirement.
This is a real game changer as IENs can also meet the requirement through the completion of post-entry nursing or other education or employer assessment of their capacity to work or practice in English.
To put in clearer terms, an IEN can meet the English Language Proficiency registration requirement through their work as a CCA or other health care provider by submitting an Employer Confirmation of EL Proficiency Form. Attached at the end of trend.
The new way means, IENs can meet the English language requirement are quicker and less costly. Also, this means doesn't expire like most English Language Proficiency exams.
2. Earlier Access to the Registration Exam. Another focus area is the evaluation and credentialing process which takes the longest in the entire registration and licensure applications for IENs into Canada.
Credentialing is expedited by completely taking out the rigors overbearing long haul of NNAS credential evaluation for IENs.
However, this NNAS bye-pass will not be available to all IENs. As NSCN listed some countries that will be eligible for this expedited process.
Nurses licensed in these jurisdictions will be able to apply directly to Nova Scotia College of Nurses (NSCN) for Registered Nurse (RN) licensure without applying to NNAS. This is cutting off a great chunk of the process.
Thereby facilitating prompt evaluation process, fast tracking issuance of Authorization To Test, and earlier access for registration exam #NCLEX-RN
3. Earlier entry to practice. Especially for Internationally Educated Nurses, All bureaucracies post NCLEX-RN before full licensure are to be eliminated.
4. Early return to practice. For Nurses who suspended practice or had their licenses expired but are willing to return. The usually protracted and long processes are also streamlined by NSCN.
5. All these culminate into a general overhaul of the Policy and Process of the College. This is done while still ensuring that all nurses providing nursing services for Nova Scotians are qualified to do so. And non who is qualified is denied the opportunity.
Top on the policy change is removing the routine requirement for registration and licensure verification from non-nursing regulatory bodies.
Some of these policy areas will be further delved into in another trend.
The Province of British Columbia has some good news for Internationally Educated Nurses (IEN) and I will be sharing the detailed process in this trend.
