Heard #SambhajiBhide's unhinged rant against #MahatmaGandhi & #MahatmaJotibaPhule. Bhide claims that Gandhi and Phule were anti #Hindu & were given the 'Mahatma' title by the Christ Seva Sangh from Sweden. This thread is meant to set the record straight
#history

It was in a function on 11 May 1888 in the Koliwada hall at Mandvi in #Mumbai that the masses conferred the 'Mahatma' title on #Phule to honour him for his selfless service.
#JotiraoPhule
It was in 1910, the year of his assassin #NathuramGodse's birth that #Gandhi was first referred to as a 'Mahatma' by his friend Pranjivan Mehta in a letter to Gandhi's guru Gopal Krishna Gokhale.
On 27 January 1915, at a mass reception for the Gandhis at Gondal in Gujarat on #Gandhi's return from South Africa, local priest Jivram Kalidas Shastri presented Gandhi with a scroll referring to him as the ‘Mahatma.’ This was the 1st public occasion where the honorific was used
It is true that Phule was influenced by the egalitarian ideas of Christ and Christianity. But this held true for most social reform movements of that era like the Paramhans Sabha and the Prarthana Samaj.
Like #Phule's Satyashodhak Samaj, these movements were also monotheistic (they believed in a one formless god), anti-caste and did not believe in idol worship.
While becoming a member of the Satyashodhak Samaj, one had to perform a ritual called 'tali uchalne.' A bag containing bhandara (haldi), gulal, a piece of jaggery, dry coconut, dhania, paan and betel nuts had to lifted and gods like Khandoba and Biroba were hailed.
This was essentially a Hindu ritual.

There is no recorded evidence of Satyashodhak leaders converting to Christianity.
Phule did a yeoman's service to Hindu society by declaring war on its social evils. Gandhi too involved the masses and women in the freedom struggle and broad-based it. Is this pinching these demagogues?

The #ShivSena was launched on 19 June 1966 by #BalThackeray. Its initial targets were #SouthIndians. The genesis of the Sena had its roots in a similar anti-South Indian campaign by his father #PrabodhankarThackeray in 1922 Thread:

Indians across faiths follow syncretic traditions. Recently, Tryambakeshwar, a jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva near #Nashik in #Maharashtra, hit the headlines after it was alleged that some Muslims tried to forcibly enter the shrine
Later, it was clarified that the men were following a decades-old tradition, where the devotees of the Sufi saint Hazrat Syed Ghulab Shahavali Baba stand outside the temple and blow the smoke from the loban (frankincense) into it as a mark of respect

Manwath is a taluka in #Maharashtra's #Parbhani district. It is located around 500-km from #Mumbai. This obscure place was rocked by a series of 10 gruesome ritualistic murders in the 1970s. These killings were the result of #superstition.

Five girls who were about ten years old, an year-old child and four women in their mid-thirties were murdered between 14 November 1972 and 4 January, 1974. These murders had a similar modus operandi and pattern. They were committed at night. These incidents shocked #Maharashtra
The time and location of the crime, use of women as victims, nature of injuries caused to them, pvt parts of some of the victims being cut to extract blood, the absence of motive for the killings, the attempt to dodge the police and the extreme brutality made the case macabre

For any researcher or author, getting access to old, rare #books & reference material is crucial. There are few book sellers who provide these for a substantial fee. But my experience with at least two of them has been less than average.
#BooksTwitter
One of them is a known bibliophile. He stocks and sells copies of old and rare books. His only problem is that you ask him for one book and he will compel you to buy four more. It is like going to a shop to buy something worth Rs 10 and making purchases worth Rs 100!
A good man, but very disorganised and absolutely unprofessional!
