THREAD: I first visited #Srebrenica on 28 November 1992 covering 1st UN food convoy that reached the enclave since the beginning of #Bosnia war. We were 3 teams, @SkyNews, @CNN & Belgian @RTBFinfo. (@amanpour & @NicRobertsonCNN were there). #Belgium #Army provided food trucks. /2
2/ They were good & reliable but #Dutch #military #police who were convoy command & security already then failed to impress me: pompous and incompetent. Unprepared, could only communicate with @UN HQ in Kiseljak and #UnitedNations in New York was by #SkyNews & #CNN satphones! /3
3/ After 5 days of being screwed by local Serbs with "democratic protests" and "spontaneous widows" & all usual BS we finally made it to #Srebrenica. Situation was appalling! The #hospital, formerly a small outpatient clinic, was overcrowded & incompetently run. As son of a /4
4/ #surgeon, with several wars under my hat, I saw that maybe 1 in 4 wounded would survive. Hospital had nothing, they "patched" deep bullet wounds with brown industrial sticky tape branded with some local factory name. Everything reeked of #death, stale putrid acidic stink of /5
5/ decomposing flesh. It was being run by a cheeky nitwit MD, utterly incompetent but politically well-positioned, who kept feeding us with usual political #propaganda but had no clue how many patients he had (head nurse knew: 75). As we were filming an obviously dying soldier /6
6/ Mirsad Omanović, Dr Ejub Alić suddenly tore off the tape covering a gaping, fist-size, wound on his neck "for the world to see". Disgusted with this cruel treatment of the wounded "for the benefit of the cameras" as he claimed, we refused to film any more wounded. But I /7
7/ wrote down some names: Kiran Muminović, a really bad case of advanced gangrene & no treatment available; Sead Klepić from Sućeska, paralyzed, no medication. I was sure none of them would survive. We had to get out of Srebrenica before nightfall, but before leaving we all /8
8/ collected every pill & bandage we had & gave all to the head nurse. I was shocked, shamed and disgusted. Back in Sarajevo I immediately went to #Bosnia #Army Head Surgeon, great Dr Abdulah Nakaš, showed him footage & pleaded to send competent staff to Srebrenica. He did. END
Shortly afterwards the first 2 surgeons (one of them Dr Jasenko Đozić, if my memory still serves me) WALKED into Srebrenica through Serb held territory and established a proper & competent medical service.

THREAD Re. today's expected flood of "Dear #Tito" tweets: #OTD 25 May, is birth anniversary of former #Yugoslavia leader Josip Broz Tito. Many call it his #birthday although he has been dead for 43 yrs. I do not wish to rain on their parade, merely offer my own and my family's /2
THREAD to clarify, question in a PM: we were a normal & pretty ordinary non-Communist family. Not (openly) anti-Communist but not collaborating with the regime in any political capacitiy. Both my grandfathers were opposed to the idea of #Yugoslavia - they realized it may have /2
2/ been as a noble idea but was compromised by Greater #Serbian intentions to rule without allowing for any self-expression or federalism. My paternal grandfather (pic 4), whom I barely remember, he died when I was 6, used to say “both Yugoslavias [Kingdom proclaimed in 1918 & /3

THREAD In 1995 after #Oluja I reported from #Bosnia on #Serb refugees fleeing #Croatia.
A guy, 25 driving a tractor loaded w/ women & children shouts: “Hey, jounalist, remember me?” I didn’t. “In July 91 [after Struga massacre] you told my commander ‘your parastate [#Krajina] /2
2/ can’t exist, you should find a way to reconcile with #Croatia, it is your country'. They kept telling us we’ll never lose, that Serbia is behind us, but as time went on I oft thought about your words. I sensed you were right & we were headed for our own destruction”. Then & /3
3/ there I had nothing to tell him. Every refugee said “our own army ordered us to head away from home”. It was a cynical calculation by Serb leadership (I cannot claim whether Croatian Serbs decided on their own or if Milošević & the Karadžić lot from Bosnia influenced it). /4
2/ vs. #Ecumenical Patriarch of #Constantinople. Most of numerous traditional cleavages within SPC (Young Lions vs. Old Guards); Serbians vs. TransDrinians; ecumenicals vs. hardline Orthodox etc. will be irrelevant with only the split between Russian vs. Greek students, roughly/3
3/corresponding with main division: support for whatever "solution" President Vucic might propose to satisfy int'l demand to at least de facto recognize Kosovo vs. stubborn refusal to accept anything not in line with current Serbian constitution that says #KosovoJeSrbija. /4
THREAD #OTD in 1918 elected representatives from South Slav lands of former Austria-Hungary address non-elected King of #Serbia expressing their desire to create a joint state, initially under lame name of Kingdom of #Serbs, #Croats & #Slovenes (SHS), later renamed #Yugoslavia /2
2/ An archetypical #Balkans business: well-intended, ill prepared, poorly executed. All sides try to cheat & gain advantage over their partners, with biggest & strongest imposing their will at force whenever they can, at same time paying lip service to equality and brotherhood /3
3/ So begin lies, manipulations & exploitation of good intentions for selfish means. The only politician with a vision who could turn that mess into a sort-of-modern state is assassinated in parliament, precisely for calling to stop endless retelling of myths & move forward /4
