Television animation is an industry that openly hates itself.

What do I mean?

It's an industry that - very often - is run by people with absolutely no interest in what it makes.

cont. Image
Most of these pencil pushers are just former "executive assistants" who kissed the asses of their bosses who did the same before them.

They didn't go to film school or study storytelling in any capacity.

cont.
They justify this madness by saying, "But I'm the average viewer - so if I don't get it, neither will they!"

Except that they're NOT the average viewer.

They stopped watching cartoons when they were 6 and stopped thinking about them ever since.

cont.
Cartoon viewers like cartoons. Period.

But when these pencil-pushers are put in a position to produce cartoons, the first thing they seem to do is go outside of animation looking for creators.

And I'm not talking about comic books or novels...

cont.
Early in my career in I was "commissioned" (i.e. work for free in exchange for a gig if the show got picked up) to do character turnarounds for a show created by Vonda Shepard.

Now, I'm sure that Ms. Shepard is a lovely person... but her designs looked like this:

cont. Image
I'm not kidding. They wanted turnarounds. For... THAT.

Now... "Who's Vonda Shepard?" you're asking...

She was a piano player on a show called 'Ally McBeal' that was hot stuff for about a minute back in the mid-90s. She wasn't the star...

cont.
...she was a musician who sort of played "bumpers" at the beginning and end of each episode.

This woman had a development deal with Fox while most actual animators couldn't get a meeting to pitch if their lives depended on it.

Again... let's be clear...

cont.
...I don't resent her for anything... I resent the executives who looked at this hot mess of a show (believe me, the show's "plot" was just as weak as the art) and said, "LET'S GOOOOOO!!!!"

cont.
I'm also NOT implying that every show must be the life's work of a seasoned animator...

I'm just saying that the animation industry has always had an eagerness to look anywhere but under its own roof for content - whether it's stand-up comics or piano bar singers.

cont.
I mean... if you need heart surgery, do you go running to the nearest shoe salesman or plumber and say, "What ideas do you have on how my heart should be operated on?"

Obviously, there are exceptions to this rule and good ideas can come from unlikely places...

cont.
...but in my experience, most executives don't even give it that much thought. They're just looking for a door out of animation, so they try to hitch their wagon to anyone who's NOT in the industry.

cont.
This is why I'm very, VERY happy to be working on indy projects with other animators.

True, we're doing it in our spare time for no money, but at least we don't have people with an open disdain for the artform calling the shots.

DISCLAIMER!!! READ THIS!!! SERIOUSLY!!! AND DON'T JUST READ IT - INJEST IT!!!

The following story outline is both FICTION and FAN FICTION!

None of these events happened... these are FICTIONAL CHARACTERS...
cont.
Not only is it fictional, it is PURELY speculative on my part!
Someone asked me once, "How would the whole Jenny/Brad/Sheldon thing work out if @RobRenzetti let you run with it?" and what follows are the results.

So... let me be clear:

cont.
Rob hasn't read it, he hasn't approved of it, for all I know he knows nothing about it, he may read it and hate it, he may be mad at me for even doing it (please don't be mad, Rob... it was just for fun)!

Point being:

I’m really excited about sharing this with you all…

But here’s the thing:

I’m getting a lot of comments like “You should do this” or “You should do that”…

One of the great things about working on a show like #mlaatr
Cont…
…is that it took on a life of its own.
It was a functional “reality.”

Those types of shows are the easiest to write for BECAUSE they pretty much write themselves.

Here’s what I mean…
…when I would put Jenny in any given situation, I had do have Jenny behave “AS SHE WOULD”… and not “as I want her to”!

So, when I wrote the outline, I wrote it as I thought it “must” happen… not necessarily how I “wanted” it to happen.

INTRODUCTION

Storyboarding is hard.

Really, really, REALLY hard.

Twenty-Five years ago I went in for a job interview at Klasky Csupo for a character design gig and met with Mitch Watson - a producer for their new show, “The Wild Thornberrys”.

PITCHING A CARTOON SHOW

By John Fountain

CHAPTER 8 - Post Mortem

Let’s talk about pitching a cartoon show, shall we? Image
Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve tried to give you all of the practical information I have based on my experience on how to pitch a cartoon.

Not as easy as you thought, huh?

Everything I know came from trial-and-error on my part.

You will try.

You will error. Image
Don’t let it eat you up.

One of the major, emotional milestones I wish I had gotten over sooner is that - as corny as this sounds - life IS, in fact, all about the journey - not the destination. Image

PITCHING A CARTOON SHOW

CHAPTER 7 - “We’d like to see MORE!”

I’ve spent a lot of time preparing you for disappointment.

And rightfully so. The odds are undeniably stacked against you.

But - let’s say you pitched your show, everything went great, and a couple of weeks later, you get the call everyone hopes for:

“We’re interested.” Image
