na caitadvidmaḥ kataranno garīyo yadvā jayema yadi vā no jayeyuḥ ।
yāneva hatvā na jijīviṣāma ste'vasthitāḥ pramukhe dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ ।।

kārpaṇyadoṣopahatasvabhāvaḥ pṛcchāmi tvāṃ dharmasaṃmūḍhacetāḥ ।
yacchreyaḥ syānniśicataṃ brūhi tanme śiṣyaste'haṃ śādhi māṃ tvāṃ ।।
यद्वा जयेम - whether we defeat them, यदि वा नो जयेयुः - or they defeat us, कतरत् - that, न: - for us, गरीयान् - greater, एतत् च - this, न विद्म: - we don’t know, यान् - whom,
हत्वा - kill, न जिजीविषाम - don’t wish to live, ते एव - those, धार्तराष्ट्राः - kauravas, प्रमुखे - in front of us, अवस्तिथा: - standing
कार्पण्यदोषोपहतस्वभावः - behaviour that arises out of kārpaṇya dosha, धर्मसंमूढचेताः - I am a fool who doesn’t know dharma, त्वां - unto you, पृच्छामि - asking, यत् - that, श्रेय: - superior, स्यात् - so,
(Arjuna now surrenders to Krishna)

Which is better, whether kauravas defeating us or we defeating them, we don't know. I don't wish to kill them (kaurava-acharyas) & live (continue) my life. But those very persons are standing in front of me for battle.
My behavior arising out of kārpaṇya dosha is detrimental to my actions. I am a fool who doesn't know dharma. Unto you, I am asking about that dharma which is determined to be superior. I am your disciple & have surrendered unto you. Please elucidate..
shastra says 'na putrAyA sishyAya' , that is rahasya upadesa are to be imparted only to sons & disciples.

It is for this reason that Arjuna explicitly declares himself to be a disciple of Krishna!
kārpaṇya dosha
-------------
One of the upadesas of yAgnavalkya (to gArgi) says this

'yo vA Etat aksharam aviditva asmAt lokAt praiti sa krupana: |
atha y Etat aksharam gArgi viditva asmAt lokAt praiti sa brahmana: |'
One who doesn't realize brahma svaroopa in his life & ultimately dies is known as 'krupana:'. One who does that is called as a 'brahmana:'..

kārpaṇya indicates that Arjuna is unable to comprehend what is brahma svaroopa. It is for this reason, he surrenders to Krishna
