For anyone familiar with the inner workings of the #Assad regime (& the palace in particular) for the many last decades, this cannot be an anodine event…
More on “Abou-Salim”, #Assad’s (father & son) Chief of Staff, deceased yesterday:

"وكان يشرف #أبو_سليم على تنفيذ أوامر الرئيس في مختلف الوزارات والمؤسسات والهيئات، ويتابع آليات التنفيذ لهذه الأوامر ونتائجها، فضلاً عن وجوده الدائم كـ “حكم ووسيط” بين الضباط والجهات المتصارعة داخل النظام ، حيث كانت كلمته مسموعة لأنها أوامر الرئيس."

Thread: #Syria, Chemical Attacks, & Disinfo

Interesting outcome from "BBC's Editorial Complaints Unit" re 13-part Mayday @Radio4 series

1. Series was on disinfo campaign -- pursued by #Russia, #Assad regime, and their allies -- contributed to death of James Le Mesurier

(1/x)
2. Series included episode on #Russia-#Assad-allies disinfo to deny #Douma chlorine attack, which killed 43 people, in April 2018

3. ECU outcome upheld series while criticizing "limited aspect" re ex-#OPCW staffer "Alex" (Brendan Whelan)

#Syria

(2/x)
4. ECU said #BBC's Mayday should have been more circumspect re 1) possibility that ex-#OPCW staffer Whelan got $100,000 from WikiLeaks and 2) any Whelan belief that #Douma chlorine attack was "staged"

5. But ECU noted evidence for both points

Now the interesting part...

What happened in #Daraa today was not a surprise -- it's been on the cards for 2+ years.

#Assad won't "reconcile" with opponents he has labeled "germs" since 2011 & #Russia has unsurprisingly proven incapable of facilitating the impossible.

This is why UNSCR 2254 exists.
In 2019-20, the most consistently unstable region of #Syria was #Daraa.

Far from being "reconciled," the "cradle of the revolution" had been brutally suppressed & forced to a surrender - & few/none of its conditions were later met.

That's no solution to a decade-long hostility.
When #Syria's largest "reconciled zone" is the country's most unstable, you have incontrovertible evidence that #Russia's reconciliation strategy is a failure.

#Syria will never stabilize with an unchallenged #Assad at the helm - this ought to be clear by today.

Ohh this is the kind of drama I live for. Max fucking Blumenthal quoting some book to bash @VaushV in due to his stance on #Syria. I don't often tweet storm but let's do some I guess

1/12
1) It's clear by the highlights that the author of this book doesn't like market socialism, people who make money from playing video games, & what is derisively called champagne socialist. I thought we were supposed to like this kind of class traitor?

2/12
2) Man it must take some pretty big balls to cowardly insinuate that others work for state propaganda when you work for #RT. The only reason that Max here is allowed on RT is that Russia uses its fake leftist cred to sow disinfo in other countries.

The stakes involved in this UNSC #Syria vote are huge -- yet it shouldn't be a subject of debate at all.

Making use of its UN veto, #Russia seeks to starve #Syrians into submission -- for a guide to the issue, read this, by Jeffrey Feltman & myself:

politico.com/news/magazine/…
#Russia claims that cross-border aid should end & be replaced by cross-line assistance sent from #Damascus -- but that's BS.

For the 4.5m people in NW #Syria in the last 12 months:

- Cross-border: ~12,000 trucks
- Cross-line: 0

Negotiations for cross-line have gone nowhere.
In recent weeks, every single UN body & all major INGOs have made it 100% clear: "there's no alternative to cross-border aid."

Given #Russia's pitiful role in UN aid to #Syria (most years, IKEA funds more than #Moscow), it's simply exasperating that it would cut it altogether.

In the United Nations upcoming vote on the decision of the of flow humanitarian aid, whether food or medical, through the liberated northern Syrian crossings, if #Moscow places its veto again, the scene will become horrific.1/10
#Syria #USA #EU #المعابر_شريان_الحياة
At the outset, it must be clarified that this ban will mean, in one way or another, the cessation of the flow of aid from most of international organizations, whether governmental or non-governmental, which work under the cover of the United Nations in general.2/10
Consequently, the population and displaced persons in the liberated north of #Syria, estimated at 4.5 million, will be deprived of about 90% of the volume of food and medical aid without the possibility to replace it from any organization or country.3/10

#OperationTrojanShield

Wow! Big news!!

With this operation, #Encrochat #Sky #MPC & other encrypted networks being infiltrated, does this mean the end of #Drugs #Corruption #OrganisedCrime ?🤔

Hmmm!

It's a brilliant operation BUT may have unintended consequences

A #Thread
I got sucked into doing some amateur study of the economy of drug trafficking because of brilliant TV shows.

When you study the numbers, understand the geo-politics, social, criminal & financial elements behind the global industry... you realise just how powerful it really is!🎬
If you trace the industry from;
- Areas of production
- Transit routes
- End Markets

Then look at the money flows;
-Peso exchange
-Hawala networks
-Offshore
-Trade based money laundering
etc

Then the operational groups🧐

It's mind blowing in scale & influence @InSightCrime 🤯

Protests continue in #Manbij for the 3rd day today, as locals demonstrate against the #SDF's policy of forced conscription.

The tensions have turned deadly this time, with 6+ dead.

Nearby, #Turkey artillery has also struck #SDF positions - intriguingly leading to an #SAA death. ImageImage
Beyond the tensions that #SDF conscription has caused within Arab-majority communities, the financial implications are of particular significance.

The last I heard 3 weeks ago, the #AANES has 300,000+ people on the payroll (civilian & armed) -- and revenue is shrinking, fast.
The U.S -- first under #Obama, then #Trump & now #Biden -- positioned the #SDF not just as the frontline vs. #ISIS, but also as a rival to #Assad's regime.

To match that expectation, the #SDF needed to grow & achieve Arab balance -- BUT we're now actively removing its revenue.

.@frontlinepbs's documentary on #HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani begins at 10pm EST tonight -- it's already caused shockwaves in the jihadist world.

I've been studying #HTS (& its predecessors) & Jolani's leadership for 10yrs -- the story has profound analytical implications. Image
@frontlinepbs Few could have imagined in 2012-13 that Jolani's Jabhat al-Nusra would years later have a new name & be speaking in quasi nationalist tones; running a semi-technocratic "govt"; proactively engaging w. international NGOs & media; & seeking to establish dialogue w. Western govts.
@frontlinepbs The path between '12 Nusra & '21 #HTS is complex & strewn with inter-factional conflict; vicious internal strife; geopolitical manipulation; and above all, the impact of #Syria's nationwide uprising.

In breaking from #AlQaeda, #Jolani sparked a massive intra-jihadist debate.

Doch warum genau ? Was steckt wirklich dahinter ?

#Thread.

While the SPD-led Justice Ministry in #Germany is providing the political infrastructure to investigate crimes against humanity committed by agents of the #Assad regime, its sister party in #Denmark decides to repatriate Syrians back to Damascus.

This reckless decision not only contradicts the ideals of European social democracy & must be interpreted as a n appeasement policy towards right-wing populist resentment but is also exemplary of the thought patterns that can be found among many European policymakers.
@mattiastesfaye's statement that there would no longer be any danger to Syrians from Damascus derives from a widespread narrative on the Syrian tragedy, which frames this conflict as a civil war pitting a sovereign state against non-legitimate militants.

If you read between the lines, this means #Assad's economy was doing OK when #ISIS controlled the oil fields, but when the #SDF took them, the regime suffered.

That's quite an admission -- so perhaps the documented & sanctioned oil trade between #ISIS & #Assad really mattered!
Just in case the tweets are deleted, here they are...

More broadly, #Assad's regime lost control of almost all its oil in 2014 -- 3yrs before this 'game-changing' moment cited from 2017.

In truth, @joshua_landis
& George Saghir are making a political, not analytical statement.
@joshua_landis If you want to be analytical (& truthful), take a look at the evolution of #Syria's economy -- like this chart by @Karam__Shaar shows.

Now, does October 2017 look like a game-changing moment? No.

Does the start of #Lebanon's banking crisis? Irrefutably, yes.

Very interesting -- ahead of the D-#ISIS Small Group meeting, @aawsat_News says the coalition is considering expanding policy to include combating #ISIS in areas controlled by the #Assad-#Russia-#Iran alliance, which it says has "failed" to defeat #ISIS.

aawsat.com/node/2887216
@aawsat_News It's been clear for a long time that #ISIS's resurgence, particularly in #Syria's central 'Badiya' desert was (a) sustainable & (b) eventually going to spillover into @CJTFOIR/#SDF areas on the eastern side of the #Euphrates.

We can sit & watch, or act.

@aawsat_News @CJTFOIR The @aawsat_News report says the D-#ISIS Coalition is working on a public statement in which 2 areas of pro-#Assad control -- the (1) Badiya & (2) #Syria-#Iraq border region -- could become areas of [aerial] @CJTFOIR operation.

The border is critical for logistics, finance etc.

Today, March 30, is the anniversary of another important #Syria10 marker: Bashar al-Assad's first public address after the start of peaceful protests in 2011. This thread remembers this critical turning point in the early days of the #SyrianRevolution. 🧵1/
At the time, mass demonstrations across #Syria called for greater freedoms & an end to corruption and arbitrary abuses by the state. Many were hopeful that the president would listen to these demands & announce major reforms ... But he remained silent. 2/
After 15 days of protest & 61 people killed by regime forces, #Assad made a televised speech to parliament. Many Syrians I interviewed hoped that, in this moment of crisis, Bashar would finally become the reformer that he had claimed to be when he took power 10 years earlier. 3/

@SecBlinken @ABlinken In 10mins, @SecBlinken will chair a UNSC session on humanitarian aid in #Syria.

With the #Biden administration settled in, there's a clear trend emerging in certain circles to swat away long-standing, complex foreign policy challenges -- and #Syria appears to be low-hanging fruit.

'#Syria doesn't matter,' some say... 'It was just never that important.'
It's good for there to be a debate -- & yes, 'great power competition' (#China, #Russia etc.) ought to be *the* priority.

BUT to shove #Syria aside as a minor inconvenience would be profoundly reckless, given the extraordinary costs it's inflicted on global stability since '11.
So far, arguments in favor of '#Syria doesn't matter' can be broken down into 2 camps:

(1) Those who ignore the profound past, current & future costs altogether - or worse - (2) those who astonishingly claim that #Assad, #Russia & #Iran can resolve the crisis & achieve stability

Today marks 2yrs since the territorial defeat of #ISIS's proclaimed 'Caliphate' in #Syria & #Iraq.

Militarily, the group remains engaged in a pre-planned decentralized insurgency, which is sustaining a steady tempo in #Iraq & #SDF areas & a clear *resurgence* in central #Syria.
The D-#ISIS Coalition has done all the right things thus far, but a disinvestment in #Iraq or #Syria would unquestionably benefit #ISIS's long-term plan (which we've seen play out before: 2010-14).

The deviation here is #Assad-held central #Syria -- a zone of deep, deep concern.
As analysts like @GregoryPWaters have shown, #ISIS is engaged in a methodical/sustained resurgence in central Syria -- where pro-#Assad forces have proven incapable of containing, let alone defeating a dispersed desert insurgency.

Tempo/potency/scope are consistently increasing.
