R. Lee Ermey was hired to be technical advisor on "Full Metal Jacket." He wanted to play the drill instructor. Stanley Kubrick said no.

So while auditioning extras Ermey got into full wardrobe and BECAME the drill instructor. Kubrick changed his mind.

Life is what you make it.
Here is @MatthewModine on how #RLeeErmey took the "Full Metal Jacket" role from the original actor.

"Lee would step in and take over. Full speed. Balls out. ... Lee was. Tim wasn’t. So Tim is on a plane home."

From @FMJDiary: readjack.wordpress.com/2010/12/16/fro…
.@MatthewModine summed up #RLeeErmey thusly:

"Let it be a lesson. Don’t play, Matthew. Balls out. It’s not too late to be stuck on a plane and sent the fuck home!"

Thank you! I encourage fans of R. Lee Ermey and of "Full Metal Jacket" to check out @FMJDiary, and the full "Heaven or Hell" making-of documentary.

R. Lee Ermey retired from @USMC in 1971. His earliest film work was in "Apocalypse Now" as a technical advisor while playing a helicopter pilot. In 1985 Stanley Kubrick hired him as technical advisor for "Full Metal Jacket." As @AdamBaldwin describes here, his presence was FELT.
