I heard "suicide attack in Kabul" and today, unlike other days, I didn't want to *tsk* and move on. I wanted to learn something about the journalists who were killed. Here's what I found out about 4 of them, as described by former colleagues.
This is Abadullah Hananzai, of @DaRadioAzadi. @QadirHabib said he was "amazed by the bravery and courage of this young man." Hananzai wasn't afraid to tell a story, he only cared about the truth. Married recently, next week would have been his first wedding anniversary.
This is Sabawoon Kakar. He joined @DaRadioAzadi almost 5 years ago. Funny, nice but also the bravest guy on the video team. He ran towards the bombs to be first on the scene. Kakar had worked on a series profiling suicide attack victims, giving them humanity. Now, he is one.
This is Maharram Durrani. An Islamic Law student, she wanted to be a journalist. Why? She wanted to tell the extremists that the Islam they follow isn't the true Islam. She wanted to relay an accurate Islam to her people. She would have started at @DaRadioAzadi May 15th.
And this is Shah Marai. He's taken more than 18,000 photos for AFP. Deputy Chief Editor Chris Otton worked with him when the Taliban were briefly kicked out. A joyous time Marai captured through the happy moments. Kids at a fair, people holding hands in the park.
