Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley on @hughhewitt today (hughhewitt.com/senate-judicia…): "Our goal is five district judges and at least one circuit judge and possibly two every other Wednesday between now and Christmas." See: buzzfeed.com/zoetillman/rep…
I'm hearing from a source w/ knowledge that the White House will be announcing another slate of judicial nominees soon (joining the nearly four dozen announced so far in 2018), could come as early as today. Also hearing the list may include several New York nominees. Stay tuned.
And there it is, the White House just announced Trump's 14th wave of judicial nominees. There is one appeals court nominee, Ryan Nelson for the 9th Circuit — Nelson had been nominated to be solicitor for the Dept. of Interior, but hadn't gotten a final vote yet
There are also nine district court nominees. First up, two nominees for SDNY (there are five vacancies):
- Lewis Liman, a partner at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton
- Mary Kay Vyskocil, currently a US bankruptcy judge
There are four nominees for EDNY (note that Brown & Gujarati had been nominated under Obama):
- Gary Brown, a US magistrate judge
- Diane Gujarati, a federal prosecutor
- Eric Komitee, GC of Viking Global Investors
- Rachel Kovner, who works in the US solicitor general's office
Other district court nominees:
- WD-NY: John Sinatra Jr., partner at Hodgson Russ
- ND-AL: Corey Maze, attorney for the state of Alabama
- ED-PA: Joshua Wolson, partner at Dilworth Paxson
Note that all of the NY district court nominees announced today were on the list of proposed candidates that the White House sent to Schumer and Gillibrand last summer: buzzfeed.com/zoetillman/the… We don't have nominees yet for US attorney for SDNY and EDNY
In other judicial nominations news: Senate Judiciary Committee just voted 18-2 to approve Mark Bennett's nomination to Hawaii seat on the 9th Circuit. Cruz and Sasse voted *no*. Cruz said he found Bennett's record troubling, re: 2nd Amendment, same-sex marriage, other issues
Schumer spox says the NY judicial nominees announced today by the White House were the result of a "sound, collaborative and bipartisan process" — rare cooperation between Schumer and the Trump administration
