We’ve had our delegation passes threatened, our language policed, our live-streams cut off & permissions to protest denied at #COP28.

But we will never stop speaking out for #Palestine.

There is no #ClimateJustice without human rights for all. 🧵1/5
theguardian.com/environment/20… Despite attempts to silence us, we stood with our partners and other climate justice groups to demand a #CeasefireNOW and an end to the occupation, both outside the climate summit...    2/5

We are witnessing a genocide unfolding. And the UK government is supporting it.

This morning Israel issued an ‘evacuation’ order to 1.1 million Palestinians in northern Gaza including Gaza City — half the population of the Gaza Strip.

🧵1/14 The Israeli military have given Palestinians just 24 hours warning to leave their homes: which the UN has said is an impossible order.

Israel’s apartheid regime has ensured that there is no place of safety to flee to in the entire Gaza Strip..

Israel is committing war crimes by subjecting Palestinians to humanitarian catastrophe as collective punishment.

The UK must stop enabling war crimes and end all arms sales to Israel. 1/9 Geneva conventions on protections of civilians. Articles, 3, 33, and 54. Dealing with collective punishment and damage of civilian infrastructure. Whilst the UK government has rightly condemned the killing of Israeli civilians, UK PM Rishi Sunak has pledged to “continue to provide […] security support [to Israel]” — even as Israel targets Palestinian civilians with deadly military force, and collective punishment. 2/9

We are deeply concerned by the escalation of violence in the occupied Palestinian territory of Gaza and the West Bank, and Israel.

This has resulted in an unacceptable loss of life. We urge all parties, including the international community to work to stop the bloodshed. 1/15 All perpetrators of human rights violations and war crimes must be held to account. We condemn Hamas’ attacks on Israeli civilians and the holding of civilian hostages, and Israel’s retaliatory attacks, using the full force of one of the most powerful militaries in the world...

1/ BREAKING: Ireland announces it will exit the climate-wrecking Energy Charter Treaty (ECT).

This comes just weeks after a UK company began suing the Irish people for £85 million through the ECT — after the Irish government pulled the plug on a polluting oil & gas project. Image 2/ Ireland will be the TENTH country to #exitECT — following Denmark, Germany and France, among others.

With each week that passes, the UK’s defence of the ECT is increasingly becoming a minority position.

BREAKING: The UK’s public advisory body on climate change, @theCCCuk calls on UK govt to exit the #EnergyCharterTreaty (ECT) as it "represents risk to both a timely climate transition and to the taxpayer."

🧵The ECT allows fossil fuel investors to hold our planet to ransom. 1/5

The ECT is designed to benefit big corporations, financial speculators & legal firms — allowing them to sue the public purse for millions through secretive corporate courts.

Here's our Director @chilledasad100 explaining why it's such a threat to #ClimateJustice.👇 2/5

“The USA, the UK & the EU have wasted hours and hours [...] playing a naked game of self interest.”

The Bonn Climate Conference (#SB58) — a crucial international summit which will shape the response to the #ClimateCrisis — ended yesterday.

🧵Here's what you need to know... 1/7 The #SB58 is where the agenda & priorities for the next major international climate summit #COP28 are shaped.

Our Director @chilledasad100 has been exposing wealthy countries refusing their responsibilities & demanding that #ClimateJustice is at the centre of that agenda. 2/7

📢The UK govt is planning to force through even more clampdowns on our right to protest — despite Parliament already rejecting them once.

This time, Peers who tempered previous bills in the House of Lords are standing back, instead of taking a stand. 1/4
bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politi… We joined 48 other organisations in writing to Peers to urge them to block these draconian new powers.

Unfortunately, Peers chose not to listen & voted 154-68 to give the police almost ‘unlimited power’ to stop protests. 2/4

Spyware turns personal smartphones and devices into spying devices for repressive governments and other malicious actors.

Spyware is being used to undermine human rights around the world, and make Israel's apartheid regime more profitable.

🧵Here's what you need to know... 1/6 The pegasus effect, the global impact of surveillance techno Spyware exploits security flaws to turn smartphones into bugging devices — by activating the microphone and camera remotely, reading messages and emails, or even creating documents appearing to be from the phone’s owner — leaving no trace on the device. 2/6

Floods in Pakistan have already killed over 1,100 people.

Melting glaciers and high rainfall have submerged close to half the country under water — destroying millions of homes and livelihoods.

How have rich countries, that caused the #ClimateCrisis, responded? 🧵 1/7 The UK and the US have offered £1.5 million and $1 million in emergency aid.

Combined, that's around 0.0002% of the estimated $10 billion of damage caused by the flooding.

Shell, Chevron & Exxon Mobil each made over $11 billion in profit in the last 3 months. 2/7

🚨 BREAKING NEWS 🚨

UK oil and gas company Rockhopper has just successfully sued the Italian state for over €190 million plus (substantial) interest — over Italy's decision to protect its environment and its people by banning Rockhoppers' fracking project.

📺Here's how. 1/6 The case was made possible by the #EnergyCharterTreaty (ECT) which allows corporations to sue countries in secretive tribunals (ISDS) over policy decisions that affect their current, and projected future, profits. 2/6

Here's why we should pay close attention to how President Petro, Vice President Márquez & their cabinet tackle moving from resistance to power. 1/6
cutt.ly/lXmbeQ2 Colombia’s first left-wing government must translate one of the world’s boldest climate-justice platforms into policy.

At the centre of its approach is an ‘economy for life’ — refocusing production, land and resource use away from corporate profits towards social needs. 2/6

🧵Institutions like the @WorldBank claim to be leading the way on climate action.

The truth is much of its investment in "climate-smart agriculture" is really just protecting the profits of the corporations that are fuelling the #ClimateCrisis and the #FoodCrisis. 1/8 Corporations have co-opted food & climate spaces — pushing the idea that the #FoodCrisis is a production problem that can be solved by increasing yields.

Only, we already produce enough food to feed everyone. In fact according to @FAO, we produce enough for 10 billion people.2/8

Israel "committing the crime of apartheid against Palestinians", states @amnesty report — a position we've long argued.

The first step in dismantling injustice is calling things what they are. 1/6 @amnesty Justice for the Palestinian people requires:

- an understanding of the situation that has developed
- the proper use of words to describe that situation correctly...

#Apartheid is one of those words.

Our event, From Crisis to Justice, pathways to a #GlobalGreenNewDeal has started.

Unfortunately, due to technical issues, this will not be live streamed (however we will make a recording available as soon as possible).

But check out the thread below for some of our highlights "Neoliberalism has taken a wrecking ball to the welfare state and communities in the Global South but also in the Global North. Taking away the basic things we need for a dignified life.

Any Green New Deal, needs to deliver for all of us."

Staff working for the six Palestinian NGOs recently criminalised by Israel were hacked with Israeli NSO group spyware.

Israel systematically uses repressive technologies to silence human rights defenders, as part of its occupation and apartheid regime.
