I’ve worked on human rights in #Kosovo for nearly 30 years, testified in 5 war crimes trials, and today – 25 years since NATO’s air campaign in Yugoslavia began – justice efforts are fragmented, stalled and woefully incomplete. An impunity thread 🧵 Unmarked graves in the Djakovica/Gjakove cemetary, July 1999. (c) Fred Abrahams/Human Rights Watch March 24, 1999, marked the start of Operation Allied Force but abuses in Kosovo went back years: persecution of ethnic Albanians in the 90s and, after the Kosovo Liberation Army rose, war crimes in 1998. I saw these bodies in Gornje Obrinje/Abri e Epërme. hrw.org/reports/1999/k…

The US-led invasion of #Iraq began 20 years ago. The human rights consequences for Iraqis have been lasting and severe. Some reflections from @hrw research in May 2003 and beyond.

Both governments should stop & join the int'l ban treaty. hrw.org/news/2022/05/1… ImageImage In Mykolaiv, for example, Russian forces launched cluster munition rockets into populated areas on March 7, 11 and 13. One of the attacks killed nine people outside a supermarket.

If Nick Clegg wants to fix Meta, he needs to tackle its problem with human rights.

No single company should hold this much power over the global public sphere. @F_Kaltheuner
@deblebrown theguardian.com/commentisfree/… @F_Kaltheuner @deblebrown Meta’s business model is based on pervasive surveillance, which is fundamentally incompatible with human rights. Still, some steps can help to minimize harm:

1/7 A deep-dive, 6-month investigation into #Syria and #Russia attacks in #Idlib that targeted hospitals, markets and schools, killed 100s of civilians, and sparked mass displacement. Apparent war crimes and possible crimes against humanity. 2/7 The attacks appear part of deliberate military strategy to destroy civilian infrastructure and force civilians out. hrw.org/news/2020/10/1…

This natural wonder in #Syria, al-Hota gorge near Raqqa, became a gruesome site during the war. Our investigation out today on how ISIS and others disposed of their victims here. A chain of events and what’s needed now. 1/10
hrw.org/news/2020/05/0… 2/10 Some anti-government groups apparently dumped bodies of Syrian soldiers and pro-government militia fighters into al-Hota before ISIS controlled the area. hrw.org/news/2020/05/0…
