I'm still reeling from the information that the gunman in San Diego last weekend was home schooled Christian and knew his Bible verses and used specific Christian coded language. #ChristianExtremism
So, last year there were reports of multiple shootings by Christian Extremists/Home Schoolers. Obviously, there were others by people in schools, etc, but I'm not here to examine those.…
This was called out by various people already, and it's not a trend I want us to take lightly.

1/ So I have Thoughts re: the (unsurprising) revelation that the latest Nazi terrorist was homeschooled for at least part of his life.
As you may or may not know, I was homeschooled for my whole education by my parents. I feel that I can speak with some authority on this subject
2/ Do I think all homeschooling is bad? No. In some cases it's healthier for a child to be removed from a toxic, psychologically and/or physically harmful situation such as extreme bullying, & there are also issues such as anxiety disorders/autism etc that may require this action
3/ HOWEVER: I also think this loophole is very easily exploited by evangelical & other cultlike ideologies in which homeschooling your child is considered 'safer' by default than allowing them to integrate into a public school system. I think there should be much more regulation

As promised, I'm back with more discussion of medical neglect in my homeschool experience. Faith healings, controlling fathers, and so much more.
As always, TW for abuse, neglect, toxic religion.
Here is where we left off, in my last thread about the anti science beliefs in ATI.

A theme that is a constant part of any discussion of quiverfull is hierarchy. The idea that there is a God-ordained chain of command is the foundation of the whole thing, and it is was made the abuse of kids like myself and my siblings possible.

In light of the HUGE problem of anti vaccination bullshit in the US, I've decided to do a thread about ATI and their extremely bad teachings connected to medical care.
This thread is a continuation of my series on abuse and neglect in the Christian homeschooling community. Last time, we looked at how quiverfull is anti-therapy and anti-psychology which is 100% connected to their hostility to science and the medical field as a whole.
You can read that here, but as always, TW for abusive behaviors:

1. As usual w/ these stories, most reporting on Taylor University students objecting to Mike Pence as commencement speaker is sloppy. Let me explain how and add some context to this story in terms of the bigger picture of Christian higher ed. #Exvangelical #ExposeChristianSchools
2. First, we don’t know how many graduating seniors object to Pence being commencement speaker. It is surely a minority. It may be a solid plurality, but most of the students opposed to Pence being invited to speak are likely to remain discreet and circumspect about it.
3. Secondly, the petition was started by alumni. I spoke with a Taylor alum recently, and what she found most remarkable was that a majority of the faculty immediately registered their opposition to the invitation to Pence with the administration. That was a brave stand to take.

1. Attention people of Twitter, ladies, dudes, and enbys, children of all ages (ok actually not for kids)! Embark with me on a journey into a bizarre parallel world often hidden in plain sight, a dark dimension whose denizens seek to transform our own. Let us enter: #TheJesusZone
2. This is going to be a primary-source-based thread focusing on the evangelical children's book Dinosaurs: Those Terrible Lizards, by creationist Duane T. Gish, who got a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Berkeley in 1953 and died in 2013. But before I dive into it, some background.
3. Most of my threads I write more or less spontaneously from ideas I've worked out in my head to varying degrees. This one I've actually been working on, on and off, for weeks. Taking pictures of the book and organizing them, reading up on the history of creationism in the U.S.

1. While there hasn’t been much recent media attention to the #ExposeChristianSchools hashtag that went viral in January, the discussion continues, along with #ExposeChristianHomeschooling and threads on primary sources. I want to share some highlights and ideas in this thread.
2. Why do Christian schools need exposing? Short answer: the Christian Right has radicalized the GOP and is in power. It is the single greatest threat to democracy and human rights in America today. And private schools and homeschooling are part of its long-term plan.
3. To understand how Christian Reconstructioists/Dominionists played and play an active role in creating evangelical school and homeschooling curricula as a means of radicalizing children and mobilizing them to impose theocracy, read @julieingersoll's book Building God's Kingdom.

1. People of Twitter, join me, if you will, on a journey into another dimension—a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of middle America. We call this dimension: The Jesus Zone.

Episode 1: Faith and Fast Food in Deepest Suburbia

#Exvangelical #TheJesusZone
2. If you find yourself in need of lunch deep in rural and suburban middle America, you may be in a bit of a bind. With so little on offer, you may be tempted to stop at an establishment like this one, a properly patriotic McDonald’s franchise that appears normal at first glance.
3. As you go inside, however, you recognize that a few things seem off. No, it’s not just that the franchise, despite signs indicating it is constantly hiring at a rate above minimum wage, is so understaffed and slow that people are giving up on the line and walking out.

Yesterday we looked at how Christian homeschooling and ATI promotes the isolation of children, which allows abuse to continue undetected and unchallenged.
Today we are going to look at some of ATI's material about forgiveness, and how it shames victims, enables abusers, and cements dysfunctional relationships.
As always, this scans of this material can be viewed here:…
⚠️⚠️CW: This thread will be discussing abuse, religious abuse, self harm, and coercion. If you have experienced these things, it may bring up bad memories. If you plan to read along, please have a plan to keep yourself safe during and after.

Yesterday I talked about how Christian homeschooling taught me:
-It is sin to lie, even if that lie protects you from abuse.
-You are never allowed to accept compliments because God gets all the credit for everything good.
Today I'm going to look at how Christian homeschooling promotes isolation and utter control of children, enabling abusers to continue their violence undetected.
All of this material comes from the ATI wisdom booklets, which you can view here:…
We'll start with the obvious, which is that Christian homeschooling inherently isolates kids, because...homeschooling.
Homeschoolers like to make jokes about socialization, like it's not an actual problem, like all of those public schoolers are making a big deal over nothing.

I’m proud to have exposed this campaign in my recent reporting on the crackdown on LGBTQ students at @azusapacific. Please share this far and wide to keep the pressure on them and @FoothillChurch.

Here’s my article for @PRAEyesRight in which I quote from Ryan Montague’s email calling for pressure on @azusapacific’s board to reverse its move toward LGBTQ accommodation. This and similar materials were passed to me by sources who requested anonymity.…
After publishing that exposé, a concerned APU faculty member reached out to let me know that things are even worse than I knew, with a purge of “liberal” and LGBTQ-affirming faculty brewing. Please let @azusapacific know what you think of this shady move.…

1. Alright, let’s unpack in some more detail what’s wrong with the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee’s recommendations in response to the concerns @jdgreear raised about sexual abuse in particular churches.

#Exvangelical #ChurchToo #EmptyThePews #SundayMorning
2. The SBC’s Executive Committee recommends making clear that “the Convention does not, and will not, cooperate with a church that clearly evidences indifference to addressing the crime of sexual abuse.”

This *sounds* good, but much hinges on what’s meant by “clearly evidences.”
3. Things quickly get iffy, defensive, and then downright dubious with respect to the meaning of “clearly evidences.” Note how quickly the Executive Committee’s moves to emphasize not presuming guilt, as opposed to framing things in terms of taking accusations seriously.

Yesterday we looked at what my homeschool curriculum said on spiritual authority, parental authority, and obedience.
Today we're going to look at material about 'physical discipline', or, more accurately, physical abuse.
All of the material we look at today is found in the ATI wisdom booklets, which you can see scanned copies of here:…
⚠️⚠️CW for assault, abuse, and violence against children.

Yesterday we looked at how ATI and my homeschooling curriculum normalized abuse and exploitation with their material about "yielding rights"

You can find that thread here.
Today, we're going to continue the discussion, and look at the promises ATI and Gothard made about abuse victims will be made "mighty in spirit"
⚠️⚠️CW: This thread discusses abuse, assault, and rape. Proceed with caution, especially if you are a survivor.
I've already posted the 'counseling' lesson I was given after being raped.
It's horrific, but I've highlighted some stuff that is particularly relevant to our discussion today, so let's have another look...

Alright friends, I've decided I just can't bring myself to write a big long thread about all of the many ways my homeschooling experience groomed me for abuse, and kept me silent after the fact.
So I'm going to take this one angle at a time.
⚠️⚠️CW: Assault and abuse are the topic of this thread. You can skip it if you need to, or please, read this when you are in the state of mind where you are able to safely process that information.
Today I'm going to look at ATI's material about "yielding rights", which laid the groundwork for abuse and assault to run rampant and unchecked in my family and church, and for victims like myself to be forced into silence and submission.

1. Now that the 4chan-to-FOX fueled right-wing frenzy over the #ExposeChristianSchools hashtag has faded, it should be easier to have a needed public discussion about the deleterious impact of certain types of parochial schools on American society and politics.
2. I am a product of K-12 Christian schools--that is, evangelical schools, which usually call themselves "Christian schools" or "Christian academies." Hence, when I coined the hashtag #ExposeChristianSchools, I did not anticipate Catholic schools being a part of the discussion.
3. That point was lost when the hashtag became conflated with the Covington story. It's perfectly fine to expand the #ExposeChristianSchools discussion into one that includes not only fundamentalist/evangelical schools, but also Catholic and mainline schools, of course.

Today I'm going to be looking at the racism in the homeschool curriculum I grew up with, specifically racism as it pertains to US history.
You can find part one of this series here, where I look at the general racism I was taught, in missions, etc.
All of the material I'm covering today comes from the ATI wisdom booklets. You can find a scanned archive of them here:…
I want to repeat my disclaimer: My goal is NOT to entertain you. My goal is to expose the racism that I was indoctrinated with from birth, the racism that is pervasive in Christian homeschooling materials, so you can gain with a better understanding of what we're up against.

Today we are going to have a look at the racism in the homeschooling curriculum I grew up with. And this is going to be a two parter, because wow, so much racism, so little time.
All of the material I will be covering today came from the ATI Wisdom booklets, which my parents bought for my siblings and I. You can view scans of the booklets here:…
This thread is NOT for entertainment purposes. My goal is NOT for you to look at this and say "wow, homeschoolers are wacky", my goal is for white Christians to be confronted with just how deeply racism is embedded in the US, and in Christian education specifically.

Now we are going to talk a little bit more about what my homeschool curriculum told me about evolution, and also what it puts forward as the REAL explanation about the timeline of humanity and fossil record.
Be patient. I promise we'll get to the stuff about dinosaurs. But first, a little more on how they told me that evolution is evil.
For example, they told me that people accepting evolution is responsible for eugenics and genocide.
A note on genocide:
I want to point out something that I found interesting as I was reading my way through all 54 ATI wisdom booklets.
Hitler gets brought up a LOT, but mostly in the context of how people rejecting the Bible as only source of Truth will lead to bad things.

Hello friends. Today we are going to look at what I, a homeschooled midwesterner who came of age in the early aughts, was taught about dinosaurs and gays. It's the greatest hits!
We're going to start with what I learned about the Scopes trial. After that I'm going to do two threads, one about evolution and creationism, and one about LGBTQ folks. It should be a wild ride.
We open with this:
"How did a famous Christian suffer destruction when he cast pearls to 'legal dogs?', followed by a dramatic description of the scene for the Scopes trial.

👋🏼 I was Baptist for 15 years growing up, then after that majored in theology at a Southern Baptist college. I had quite a bit of access to the way they talk about these things behind closed doors.

Here are their next steps.

1. Massive displays of public grief and sorrow. The Southern Baptist PR machine LOVES theatrical opportunities to build and reinforce narratives of "sin, repentance, and redemption" and they'll soak in that for a while.

2. Gradually, we will start to see them identify the nature of the "sin" committed. Lust, greed, and sexual immorality will be foregrounded, and abuse of power will be thrown in for good measure.

I live in the fastest growing school district in MT. We are trying to pass a bond the next 2 weeks to build two more schools cuz our schools can't hold everyone. You know who is actively campaigning to tank our bonds? HOMESCHOOLERS. #ExposeChristianHomeschooling
You know who is helping them? THE FUCKING CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS. They are actively posting on social media and trying to stop people from voting for our bond. #ExposeChristianSchools
The homeschoolers and private Christian school-goers are working against their own community to stop us from passing the bonds we need to make our community thrive. So next time you adopt a live and let live attitude toward them, remember this.
