๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ #UkraineRussiaWar could spillover into other areas: hot-spots are #Ganja #Zangezur #Lachin in #Azerbaijan & #Armenia ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฒ. Caucasus is critical for ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท to circumvent Russia ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ while still trading with Asia. However ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บhas troops there since 2020 ceasefire.

#Russia๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ is run by an increasingly paranoid & violent leader. As Moscow is cut-off from the international system due to sanctions, it is rapidly losing its strategic role as a transit country between Asia & Europe in Chinaโ€™s๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณmulti-billion #BeltRoadInitiative (in-land) . . .

A million containers, previously rail-transported via Kazakhstan ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ฟ & Russia ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ, have to find alternative routes to reach๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บmarkets. Hundreds of thousands of trucks are also deviating southwards (#MiddleCorridor) with increased traffic/queues reported on๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ช&๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฟ&๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฌborders . . .

The #MiddleCorridor links Asia with ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ EUโ€™s ๐Ÿ›ƒ CustomsZone (which includes ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท) through #CentralAsia and #Azerbaijan or #Iran. This corridor is a competitive alternative to #Russia for both existing & newly ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฟ signed gas supply. Same for bulk/commodity, cargo & โ€˜fast deliveryโ€™.

The technical-logistical challenges are complex. They range from road tariff quotas in transit countries and insurance levels to available infrastructure, corruption & slow border crossings to capacity levels, ferry pricing and other transit logistical issues . . .

The geopolitical challenges are also complex & the risk of re-escalation in S. Caucasus is growing. The inevitable increase in energy & logistical transport across #MiddleCorridor (due to #UkraineRussiaWar) puts ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท in a growing position of strength & realignment with West. . .

This new reality puts ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท and ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ back on their inevitable historical-rival-trajectory, competing over strategic geography and trade and competing control over East-West and North-South corridors. Depending on how Iran positions itself on Russia, it also shifts ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ท relations . . .

Many unanswered questions remain on this subject: will ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท leadership take more Turkish-state or โ€œindividualisedโ€ choices vis-a-vis Russia? Has โ˜ข๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บAkkayu, ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บBlueStream, ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บTurkStream & S-400s made ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท too dependent on ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ, or does Ankara still have sovereign/independent choice? . .

About #MiddleCorridor: #Russiaโ€™s inhumane actions in #Ukraine has pushed trade and energy southwards to the benefit of ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท. In turn, Russia puts pressure on its vulnerable neighbours, like #Georgia, #Azerbaijan & #Armenia. ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ uses same neo-colonial attitude in #CentralAsia . . .

Russian troops are stationed inside disputed territories between Azerbaijan and Armenia as Trilateral โ€œpeacekeepersโ€. They just happen to be located within a very short radius of the narrowest part of the #MiddleCorrdor where energy and goods flow from Asia to Europe ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’ฃ [END]
