I’m super curious how #Web3 may transform teaching and learning. One challenge in this endeavor is that many of us shared very similar formal education experiences. We share similar mental models, so I order to make the most of web3 tech we must shift our mental models a 🧵
2/Mental models are essential components of our daily lives. They not only shape what we think and how we understand things, but they shape how we connect things we already know together. Think filing cabinet: it’s way to organize lots of info . fs.blog/mental-models/
3/ A simple experiment, when I say “school” what comes to mind 👇
4/ Most of us remember school through the droning of worksheet, quiz, test rhythm. Rows of desks where we sat for predetermined amount of time to ensure we learned each siloed subject area.
5) How do we begin to break this cycle? I think there are two important steps we must take. 1) expand the range of mental models that we attach to the how we define education 2) be mindful that we don’t pigeon hole new tech in old systems.
6) when we talk about #edu let’s take a more holistic view of our own personal learning journeys. Upon reflection you may be surprised to think about the most powerful learning experiences you’ve had and the fact that they didn’t occur in a school.
7) experiences that were rich contextually, connected to real problems, required personal growth and maybe collaboration, may have very well taken place outside of a school. Perhaps using networks as a key piece of our education mental model can refresh our thinking.
8) The 5 Elements: A North Star for Learner-Centered Learning is a good primer for helping us expand our mental models surrounding education. education-reimagined.org/five-elements-…
9) in addition to updating our mental models we must not pigeonhole new technology by trying to find ways to plug it into an old system. The first wave of #edtech in schools provided a way to digitize what was once on paper. The hope of tech transforming edu has been elusive.
10) similar conversations are occurring across #crypto spaces as we tend to lump crypto into the same asset class as fiat currency. While they share some similarities they are fundamentally different assets. Note ~52:00 mark podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ban…
11)Most likely the largest mega trend of our lives is just getting started #blockchain #crypto #nfts #defi collectively referred to as #web3 have the potential to paint a new education canvas. To make the most of this opportunity we must not pin ourselves in with old thinking.
