Was told my best chance was a post office or even better the Bank of England. Of course, I picked the Bank of England. Between two Concalls to HK and Japan, had 15 mins - short walk from Cannon street and Bank tube stations, was let in after I stated my purpose

Security asked to see my notes, showed me a line that led to windows, someone asked for a count and (no ID was needed for an amount < 1000£) and then after verifying the 4 types of notes - 2 diff 50s, some 10s and a 1£ note, simply gave me the new crisp notes and I was off

4/n there were 10 others like me in the 5 mins I spent there. The 50s were discontinued in 2014 and the 10s earlier this year. That’s how a post demonetization scenario should be. Not demonizing the holders of some old currency notes as we do in india
5/n where innocent+honest taxpayers caught by surprise n having an old leftover kids b’day gift envelope have no recourse to that money, or worse, are deemed to have committed some crime....ha!

7/n and the DeMon exercise, whatever it’s virtues, in late 2016, was quite the betrayal of the RBI, the Govt and Supreme Court in its citizens’ faith in the promise of its institutions to uphold the value of the currency it promised the bearer - a rather weak sad show of strength
