My parents and I have never been able to share any literature with each other because despite our being decent at both Korean and English, I can’t read full-length novels in Korean and vice-versa. /1 Min Jin Lee's Pachinko in Korean and English
So when @teddygoff lent me his copy of Pachinko, I had the idea to wait for the Korean-translated version so I could read it with my mom. In our inaugural mother/son book club, we discussed what that time was like for my grandparents and my parents. /2
We discussed the suffering of women / mothers, the wide range of immigrant experiences, and the meaning of grace. For me, it was so striking to see Asian male characters who were dynamic, attractive, and varied. Thank you for this wonderful gift you’ve given us and so many. /end

1. The first time I felt seen was in my elementary school library. I was by myself, as all my classmates had already picked out books for their book reports. I had the wild idea to find a book written by someone w/my last name but found nothing. Determined, I kept looking...
2…and then I saw it. I grabbed the book, clutched it to my chest, and jumped in elation. I couldn’t believe it!

Someone with MY last name was SO important there was an ENTIRE book on him!!!

My parents had to gently explain to me that I was NOT related to Robert E. Lee.
3. There were few other AsAms in ABQ, NM. When we played the celebrity look-alike game, I always got Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan, which, you know, you’d prob have to be them to make that stretch. Looking for an AsAm author or book was part of my desire to belong, to be visible.

I don’t know much about hockey but something VERY special is happening in Vegas right now.

This is a classic sports story in the making. It shows how sports can bring healing and solidarity to a community after a horrible tragedy.
2/ In every game this season, the @GoldenKnights have honored heroes and remembered victims from the Oct. 1 shootings. I went to a playoff game a few weeks ago and witnessed the emotion first hand. It was reminiscent of sporting events after 9/11.
3/ Fans told me how this postseason run has helped the local community heal. These people have been brought together by tragedy and now are being brought closer together by hope.

THREAD: Thought I’d take a break from the news to share the story about how I was fortunate to witness an early glimpse into the genius of @Lin_Manuel.

9 years ago on this exact date, I saw him perform in the White House East Room. I even still have the program. White House Poetry Jam Program from May 12, 2009
2/ My first WH job was in the Office of Legislative Affairs. We were simultaneously working on Recovery Act implementation, credit card reform, Senate confirmations, ACA, to name a few. I’d get to the office before our 7am mtgs and often get home after 11pm. Worth it, but…
3/ OLA was located in the East Wing of the WH to be symbolically closer to Congress. This meant anytime we went to get food from the WH Navy Mess (in the West Wing), we would cross the bottom floor of the residence, where we’d stealthily walk by the guests for official events.

Being in a psychiatric ward for almost a month makes me realise a lot of things. I dont know what to do, i dont know what to think. When I was first admitted here, I was so scared and alone... I had no idea what the hell is going on
but first, about 4-5 months ago I was dignosed with MDD (Major Deppresive Disorder) , BPD ( Borderline Personality Disorder) , Shizoprenia, Anxiety and Panic Attack. I started to get profesional help just a few weeks after raya puasa

D&D feels like a HUGE cheat, since that, for me, covers B/X, BECMI, AD&D 1st and 2nd Edition, 3rd, 4th, and 5th edition.

I also don't lump Pathfinder in there because despite being a similar rules base, I learned completely different things from how the game was supported.
Standard disclaimer--I tried to pick the top ten, but I've definitely been influenced by more games than this. Sometimes, in retrospect, but there have definitely been more than these 10 that had an impact.

#THREAD: WHAT TRUMP'S EXECUTIVE ORDER DOES...AND DOESN'T DO.

Trump begrudgingly "caved" due to the backlash.

But, as it was all about holding the children hostage to get his demands...the order still pressures Congress to act quickly to avert the problems it delays and creates.
1. KEEPS FAMILIES TOGETHER...WITH BIG CAVEATS.

While the DOJ will continue to prosecute ALL adults crossing the border illegally, it keeps families together but only "where appropriate and consistent with law and available resources."

Leaves flexibility.
2. KEEPS FAMILIES W/ DHS.

Parents can stay with their children in detention with DHS, but the catch is only to the "extent permitted by law and subject to the availability of appropriations."

BIG CAVEAT...THE FLORES AGREEMENT PREVENTS CHILDREN FROM BEING DETAINED AFTER 20 DAYS.

It’s been 6 years since I was barefoot on the railing of a bridge, in the rain, literally holding on by a pinky, just hoping I’d slip. I had beautiful kids. A loving family. Friends. A good job, great money. And here’s the damn fool truth of it:
I didn’t get down because I realized it was all worth it. I looked down, and I realized the height may not be enough. I saw myself broken but still living in the rocky riverbed below. And I realized I couldn’t bear being found breathing, broken, and having to explain.
So I got myself down, told myself I’d take some pills instead. Drove home, soaking wet, and decided to get one good night’s sleep. I woke the next day, went outside for my last cigarette.

And then I saw a man, across the road, with a plastic ball around his head.

Read and Think Better, Not More (Thread)

I'm going to focus on one golden rule, to surmise: when you read, suspend the mental straitjacket of categories or compartmentalization. Also, this is more of a tirade, bear with me.
1- I am not referring to ontological categories i.e. essentially mutually exclusive things that exist in the natural world. I am referring to conceptual categories. For example, when we read - before thinking - we commit a category act: "this is a history book, etc"
So basically we've limited the potential insights and thinking before the reading begins. Why? The brain makes associations through categories. So when we read a history book, we make mental associations with other texts we've read on history, and so forth.

1/ How did we get here?

On August 1st, 2001, Democrat Dick Durbin and Republican Orrin Hatch introduced a bipartisan bill called the DREAM (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) Act. Politicians love a good acronym.
2/ The purpose of the bill was to create a path to legal immigration status for kids brought to the United States without authorization -- through no fault of their own.
3/ Despite repeatedly being introduced in both houses of Congress and once passing the House in 2010 (but not beating a Senate filibuster) the DREAM Act has been punted by Cong. Republicans for 17 years. In spite of broad bipartisan agreement that these kids need to be protected.
