I hate how Journalism counties to fetishize "objectivity". Publications have historically gaslighted communities of color by forcing them to prove that the things going on in their communities are "news worthy". Media has served as gatekeepers between the people and justice.
In an industry that centered old white male voices, what did objectivity look like for them? Stories from the projects either didn't earn a spot in the local paper, or it was exploited by the trauma porn click bait journalist.
I'm all about supporting print media. But social media has exposed a lot of things. We don't need papers to just tell the story. The people aren't willing to pay for status quo anymore. They want to invest in something transformative. We feel the gap.
Big reason I don't get called a real journalist is cause of my role in activism. I lost legitimacy because I don't subscribe to white man's theory of being neutral. There is nothing neutral about today's climate. We are at war and journalist need to decide what side they are on.
