Important point to counter in this, however: terrorism is *not* necessarily ideological, or at least not religiously so (as implied here). People regularly commit to violence states call "terrorism" w/out strong commitments to ideology, or they deploy ideology instrumentally.
Assuming a straightforward link between increasing ideological extremism and commitment to terrorist violence further erases the increasing number of empirical observations that a preference for violence *precedes* any sort of ideological affinity.
