1/3 This morning our staff & pro bono attorneys arrived at the Karnes detention center to meet with clients and were told they couldn’t meet with anyone as Karnes was empty. Around 3:45pm two of our pro bono attorneys watched as a bus was loaded at Karnes w/ mothers & children
2/3 Having been lied to all day, they decided to follow the bus from Karnes to see where they were being transferred to. An hour in to the drive they call our Comms Director @JenniferKFalcon to let her know they had been pulled over by 3 state troopers in SUV’s for “illegally”
2/3 following the bus and demanded to see their client lists. They were held for 15 minutes by police, and now continue to follow the bus which looks to be headed to Dilley detention center.

Last week, Buzzfeed reported on Juana Graciela Cardona Alverez, a 27 y/o woman w/two US citizen daughters.

She fled Guatemala after repeated sexual assault by family. She's now detained, separated from her kids.

We need your help to reunify them: change.org/p/ice-release-…
Juana's case is heartbreaking: She came here when she was 16 speaking Jacaltec, an indigenous language.

But she was was forced to sign forms she didn't understand that guaranteed her deportation, 10 yrs later, back to the town where she was assaulted.

We separated her from her kids, sent her back to a place where she'd endured sexual assault, & separated her once again for trying to rejoin her daughters.

All b/c she didn't get a fair hearing when she entered. She could have stayed, but her forms were in the wrong language.

OUT TODAY: Our video on LGBTQ+ migrants who made a hellish trek to seek asylum.

They were refused food, transport, services, etc on the caravan up. Water was thrown in their faces. They were discriminated against widely.

They banded together for protection. This is their story.
The stories are harrowing.

Lady, a Honduran trans woman, said she & her partner were often threatened. "We thought it was just a joke. Until they killed him."

She left, traveling 2.5K+ miles to Tijuana.

"You don't leave your country b/c you want to, they force you to go."
She & 80+ others traveled to Tijuana w/our help & those of other orgs.

They have strong asylum cases—burned arms from gangs, partners killed, coercion, extortion—but they needed lawyers to prove it.

And they needed housing, food, security, etc. They were & are vulnerable in TJ.

This is Nilda & her 2-year-old. Forcibly separated in Texas. Nilda was held in 5 detention centers over 2 months. Told: “This is what happens when you come to our country.” She doesn’t know what happened to Keyden. Just that’s he’s changed. Their story:
I met Nilda shortly after reconnecting w/ Keyden. My office (@BklynDefender) mobilized teams of bilingual social workers & immigration attorneys when ICE sent children to NYC. Ensured planned reunions actually happened & provided trauma counseling. Nilda & Keyden were clients.
She was strong from the beginning. Clear that she wanted to tell her story. “If I don’t, nothing will change.” She recounted the harrowing journey. Why she fled her home in La Ceiba, Honduras & risked everything to come to the U.S. She expected: “A country of freedom & safety.”

A migrant I followed for a story this year spent 7 months in detention & she worked for $1/day cleaning the detention center.
She mentioned, for example, that she needed to make money to buy basic toiletries at the overpriced detention center store and to make phone calls which in detention are some of the most prohibitively expensive calls anywhere in the world.
When I interviewed her after she received asylum in the US, she didn’t want to tell me how much she was paid for her work at the detention center. She said “it’s embarrassing.”

Even worse was a mom who came to the US with her daughter “Celia” (not her real name). Her other daughter had been kidnapped by the gang a month ago and never seen again. The gang said Celia was “next,” and threatened to kill the rest of the family, so they left.
It’s taken me a while to write about the time I spent with the Dilley Pro Bono Project at the immigrant family detention center. It’s difficult to put into words the jarring mix of hopefulness and fear, the moms waiting for news and the laughter, crying and sniffles of children.

As a 16-year old, Charles Rodgers was involved in a robbery of a Popeye’s Fried Chicken.

His co-defendant (who brandished a pellet gun) served a short sentence and was released over a decade ago.

Rodgers was unarmed.

He was sentenced to 40 years in prison without parole.

Rodgers’ sentence for a non-violent crime as a juvenile exceeded even some for murder.

In 2011, Oprah featured him in a documentary called “Serving Life”.

The movie followed his work in a prison hospice as a caregiver to dying inmates.

Pro bono attorneys then joined his case.
The attorneys argued that a 40-year sentence without parole for a non-violent offense was unconstitutional.

The judge hearing the appeal?

The son of the original judge who handed down the 40-year sentence.

Still, he sided with Rodgers.

Before the reunion, Hermelindo mopped floors & washed bed sheets at the home in the L.A. area where he was staying. He cooked his favorite chicken dish. He bought new Spiderman themed clothes. “I want him to walk in here and know he’s home,” Hermelindo said.

It’s after midnight, I just finished typing up my case notes, and I swear it’s been at least 2 days since last night’s log. No? Just one day? Okay. Time is weird when you’re in a temperature-controlled windowless room all day.
