Part one of a panel debate on euthanasia and assisted dying looks at the line between personal autonomy and protections for vulnerable people.
Both positiins are represented

Timely, as Euthanasia legislation is before parliament in NZ

Part 1 of 2👇🏼

Part 2 of discussion on euthanasia looks at importance of regs to insure assisted suicide is limited to those at the end of life w serious illness &/or disabilities 👉🏼who personally make the choice (ie it is not foisted on them) & are not just depressed
(NZ) End of Life Choice Bill
parliament.nz/en/pb/bills-an…

The aim of the Bill is to legalise voluntary euthanasia
👉🏼in certain circumstances.

The Bill gives “people with a terminal illness or a grievous and irremediable medical condition the option of requesting assisted dying.”
The End of Life Choice Bill regulates assisted dying
👉🏼and limits it to people with terminal illness or severely disabling disease who make a personal decision that they cannot put up with suffering anymore.

IMO giving people with a terminal illness or a severely disabling, untreatable medical condition the autonomy to make a choice to end their suffering is a compassionate thing to do.

The argument that assisted dying will result in the govt deciding to knock people off because they’re disabled is paranoid think

A govt that bad would not produce regulation that leaves the choice to the person, and requires 3 supportive opinions (including that of a specialist)
The argument that this would result in assisted suicide for people who are only depressed is false.

Certainly, many people with terminal illness and severely disabling disorders are often depressed. But the Bill does not enable assisted suicide for people who are only depressed
The argument that this would result in a change in attitude - causing people to be judged fit to live or die by others is valid.
(Supremacists always hold those views)

But assisted suicide is legal in a number of countries.
They haven’t devolved into hell holes of Nazi eugenics
