I just did a last minute swap to the reading for my Medieval Religion, Medicine, and Magic course. I decided to put in some blog posts by doctoral students in various stages of research, to show students how ideas are born, grow, & get refined.
Excited to see how it goes!
I’m hoping to show students that scholarly writing is the product of a long process, not something scholars are born knowing how to do. And I hope this makes them more comfortable about where THEY are in their process.
Also that geeky joy is a valid starting point for the research process! Cultivate nerdy play!!
Here's some of the stuff I've assigned for the curious, alongside textbook excerpts:
-Hetta Howes, A Brief History of Medieval Magic, historyextra.com/period/medieva…
-David Porreca, Using Gems in Medieval Spells, medievalists.net/2014/05/using-….
And:
-Laura Mitchell, Love and the Longevity of Charms, recipes.hypotheses.org/10806
-Elizabeth Meg, Medieval Magic, Folklore and Superstition, scranshums.com/2016/05/27/med….
And did I make my students read my viral Tweet thread about the Satanic Panic in the first week of class? You bet I did =D
Power went out at home so I went to a nearby botanical garden to use WiFi, and it ended up providing some nice material for a kind of virtual field trip maybe? Hmmmm
...does this mean that “and your father smelt of elderberries” is...anachronistic??
This is an amazing development in park services 🤘
