In #Naperville, which only recently went blue, we get mostly support but some push back. Here is how we do it:
Smile and wave at everyone
Ask people walking by if they are voting (or if they look young, if they are registered to vote./1
#Naperville
If no, we hand them a half-sheet of paper with 5 min online registration websites.
Sometimes we remind people we are there EVERY night until midterms, 6-7 and invite them to join us.
Or say, Vote, Midterms, Nov 6th
Most say yes, thumbs up, etc./2

Re the negatives:
If a car drives by and yells TRUMP! We yell back LOVE!
One said "build the wall." We said, "WE ARE THE WALL"
Head shakes and thumbs down are ignored.
One drove by and said, "Seriously?" "Yes," we yelled at the back of his/3

car. "Like a heart attack!" Family in a Tuk Tuk (little golf-cart like local car service) thumbed down. His wife grabbed his hand and said, "Stop that!" 🤣
Anyone who wants to talk, I'll talk to as long as they are civil./4
#Naperville
If someone wants to rant, I try to find anything to agree with and to move them away from blocking signs. If they want more than a minute, I invite them to sit down with me at 7 (after we're done.) No one has. But /5

one man said, "I like that. That's what we need. To talk." He then shook all of our hands while saying he didn't agree with everything on our signs, but appreciated the offer./6

We've had a visitor who spouted many far-right talking points (MSM, Soros, etc.) but before we could find agreement (he wouldn't let us speak), he stormed away yelling "I am not a victim." Another woman just wanted someone to talk to. /7

One of my regulars is a saint. He stood the entire hour and just listened. All was well. As I said, most people are supportive. We find agreement, use humor with "live trolls" or ignore them. Generally we smile and enjoy the time together./end
