Here is the law that is being applied to social media so that they can avoid legal responsibility for what their users post.

Section 230 of the "Communications Decency Act of 1996"
More on Section 230:

"Section 230(c)(1) states that “[n]o provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.”

Yet, all of the social media providers (and others) ARE, in fact, acting as publisher and SPEAKER for people and businesses that they don't like. They are telling people what they can/can't publish, editing posts by telling people to delete them, and kicking them off services.
