Yup, as expected. The Hacke piece among most read on @RealClearWorld

We'll see the (head-)line in the US: "Germany considers acquisition of nuclear weapons".

Some will blame Trump, for others it will be proof that Germany remains dangerous.
Truth is that Germany is concerned about future of nuclear deterrence, at least the strategic community is, but almost nobody thinks that acquiring nukes is anything Germany should do in the foreseeable future. Almost everybody thinks it should be discussed on a European level.

FAZ commentary about the fashionable talk about a European army: "Especially the (German) political class wouldn't object if the unloved responsibility for military affairs would dissolve itself in some kind of European army."
That nails it. Germany (and not just the political class) feels uncomfortable with military power. Re-armament in the 1950s happened against widespread resistance and ever since Germans were happy to delegate defense to the US/Nato. Now some hope it can delegated to "Europe".
But a European army isn't a realistic prospect. Without US leadership, Europeans likely to be more, not less divided on strategic and military affairs. And neither Paris not Brussels will be able take over the role of the protector for Germany and Central Europe from Washington.

Korean family reunions are occurring now. They are deeply moving. There are some politics worth pointing out:

Recently, the headline “Do We Need the Bomb?” ran on the front page of Welt am Sonntag, which is one of Germany’s largest Sunday newspapers. The author is Christian Hacke, a respected and mainstream academic, and obviously, his answer is "Yes."
If I'm right, there's been no other mention of this debate in any mainstream print newspaper in the US, even though it is hard to imagine what news could be more important. A German Bomb is anathema to most German politicians. It would take an earthquake to change that.

Since this went viral, here are some responses to my critics: 1. Trump got 3 US hostages back; Obama got 10. These are indeed successes but hardly validate either's approach. Recall that N Korea takes hostages precisely to blur the political and strategic issues - nukes, human /1

Those that oppose water boarding do so arguing it is torture. Further arguing that information extracted by torture is unreliable. When torture is applied the subject with say anything to stop it is the basic logic presented.
