Just a little TT job market advice as it’s that time of year again. Listen to interview podcasts to learn how to talk about your research compellingly to different audiences. This was CLUTCH when I was on the market last year. Some of my favorites are:
@thedigradio, so many great interviews with scholars and activists from across the disciplines and within and without the university. There’s also just something so soothing about @DanielDenvir’s voice
@thisishellradio, tons of interviews with activist and academics. Chuck Mertz asks the best questions. Listen to the recent one with C. Riley Snorton on trans politics to hear what I’m talking about.
@WhoMakesCents, a history of capitalism podcast, for excellent interviews with many of my favorite historians. They really dig into the meat of the texts and discuss methods and sources and all sorts of other things scholars need to be able to talk about.
New Dawn with black politics scholar Michael C. Dawson for amazing discussions of racial capitalism with junior scholars who are still in the process of writing and more senior scholars playing with new ideas
@newhistorybooks for interviews with scholars from many different dicisplines. This one also helps me stay up on the literature particularly outside of my subfield. There are a newbooks podcasts for a variety of disciplines too.
@KPFA Against the Grain for excellent interviews with scholars, activists, and journalists from the left
@AlwaysAlreadyOn, great critical theory podcast. I don’t always know what they’re talking about because it’s super theory heavy but it’s one of the few podcasts I’ve found that really gets into the latest in Black Studies
@DeadPundits gets into the weeds which I like. Great interviews with scholars of political economy.
So these are some of my favorite interview-based podcasts, most from a left/center-left perspective. I’m convinced that constantly listening to folks talk about ideas helped me learn to talk about mine.
