Here's a spreadsheet of the 50+ projects/businesses I've started/built/sold/shut down over the past 15 years, along with what happened to them and links to Wayback to see how terrible they were. 😛

2004/2005 were particularly embarrassing w/ all my freaking Amazon affiliate sites. 🤦‍♂️

2010 is when things start shifting towards more sustainable products & businesses.

Interesting tidbits...

* There's a business in there that I co-founded with @mubashariqbal (prolific maker) over 12 years ago.
* You'll find the sale price of a dozen projects ranging from $200 to $75,000.
* There's a site in there about prepping (as in, "the world is ending")
Also, I was consulting in the middle of most of this. Had over 300 client projects from 2003-2013.
A number of folks have suggested it: would anyone be legitimately interested in me doing a (probably lengthy) @FounderChats episode where I walk through each one of these 50+ projects and tell the stories of how they came to be + any additional insight/context?

Was looking into a way to let you @-mention @lasertweets in response to a tweet and have it auto-generate the URL for you...but everything I'm reading says that's against Twitter TOS.
I *think* I'd have to build a whole system where you have to grant permission to a "Laser Tweets" app, and then monitor your account for "@lasertweets" mentions from you and then basically DM you the URL.
Regardless, it's wayyyy more hassle than I imagined it'd be.

This almost feels like something where there some be a hosted service that already handles most of this.

I tried Zapier, but no go (thanks to the Twitter TOS).

1/ Understanding why customers cancel may be one of the most frustrating parts of building a company.

Asking users during the cancellation process why they're cancelling can be really useful, but data is only as useful as the action you take on it.
2/ Lots of SaaS companies have a simple form on their cancellation page that asks the users why they're cancelling...but almost nobody does anything with the data.

It may get piped in to a spreadsheet somewhere or sent to someone's inbox, but then it just fades away.
3/ In addition, even if you're collecting reasons, knowing which reasons to pay attention to is many times nearly impossible.

Sure, maybe most people are cancelling b/c "It's too expensive", but is that actually who's causing the most lost revenue?

For nearly 5 years Baremetrics has relied almost exclusively on a single channel for growth: content marketing. It was a natural outpouring of us targeting "founders". It was easy and in the early days, it worked well, bringing us to where we are today.
But these aren't early days anymore. We're a profitable, five year old company doing over $1M in revenue. We're "old" in startup years and intend to get even older. While we're not a brand new company anymore, our growth methodologies and systems are still in their infancy.

Digital transformation is on everyone’s lips yet few seem to know even believe what they say. That talk is cheap is not new. It is often more important to seem to do something than to act. There are things that must be said that cannot be done. Organizing is a play of hypocrisy.
Cheap talk may however prove costly. As @jhagel observes, innovation labs set up to pursue transformation often serve as little more than outposts that executives can point to as evidence of their embrace of digital. Consequently, smart people quit and take their ideas with them.
That managers spend so much money on external advice while ignoring their own workers is indeed deeply ironic. It is not strange, however, since in doing so they buy the latest lingo; essentially legitimacy to fail, which begs for more external counseling. sloanreview.mit.edu/article/when-s…
