Our investigation into the murder of Pavlos Fyssas is currently being presented to a court near Athens. Lawyers for the neo-Nazi organisation #GoldenDawn failed to convince the judge to exclude, after they admitted they had not even read the report to which they were objecting.
Fyssas, a Greek anti-fascist rapper, was killed on 18 Sep 2013 by a member of Golden Dawn. Our investigation was first discussed in July, in the courtroom at Korydallos Prison, near Athens. Lawyers for the GD objected strenuously, questioning our credentials.
Fyssas' murder has taken on national significance. 69 leading members of GD - Europe's only neo-Nazi group with seats in a national parliament - are charged with running a criminal organisation. If they are found guilty, GD would lose its 16 seats in Greece's parliament.
GD's leaders command absolute authority & responsibility for the group's actions, mimicking the 'Fuhrerprinzip' of Nazi Germany. Prosecutors aim to use known communications between GD members from that night to show the principle in practice, & to prove GD to be a criminal org'n.
Forensic Architecture was asked by Fyssas' family to investigate the actions of the police at the time of his death. Witnesses allege that police were present during the murder & didn't intervene. GDs infiltration of the Hellenic police is well-documented: aljazeera.com/news/2018/04/t…
(Incidentally, decade-old threads connect GD to the NSU, a German neo-Nazi cell responsible for 10 murders. The NSU had their own ties to the state - why was an intelligence agent present when they murdered Halit Yozgat? Our investigation & more here: )
We examined footage from multiple CCTV cameras that captured the incident that led to Fyssas' murder. In doing so, we saw that the Greek police's own investigation failed to notice that footage from the different cameras was timed incorrectly - as a result, they found nothing.
Pavlos' girlfriend begged police to intervene. She says they told her: 'we can't do anything'. When the killer was arrested, he reportedly told police: 'don't worry, I'm one of you.' Beyond this trial, links between GD & the Hellenic police should concern all of Greek society.
