Katie Hopkins filing for insolvency after being sued for libel. If the whole case demonstrates one thing, it's that the bar for a "journalist" to be noteworthy is stunningly low if you write offensive, politically incorrect things. 1/
Let's review the glaring lack of originality in her tweets.
Ginger babies are like babies, but "that much harder to love".
Telling fat people how to dress: "skinny jeans are only for skinny people" it got 780 likes, but just sounds like that bitchy girl in high school 2/
I mean, for real? I'm reminded of a scene in that Steve Martin movie Roxanne, where the big nosed protagonist invites a heckler to come up with more creative ways to insult him 3/
Calling for a final solution for Muslims is deeply offensive but it's hardly original. That phrase was used in 1942, 76 years ago.
Or calling refugees cockroaches?
Or saying people in debt had only themselves to blame (ah the irony).
Nope, no originality points 4/
People apparently so much love to see people telling it as it is (which means to repeat tired old baseless tropes about poor, Muslim disabled, fat, or mentally ill people) that Hopkins got one sweet gig after another. /5
Conversely, imagine I tweeted, with the same lack of originality or verve "politically correct" things. How many retweets will I get?
Muslims are wonderful people!
Migrants help to strengthen our economy!
We should help refugees! 6/
It reminds me of Boris Johnson getting £275,000 a year to write 52 columns of about 1000 words each for the @dailytelegraph. Completely devoid of research or content, but with clickbait value. That's the state of journalism in the UK. 7/
No journalist on twitter tweeting politically correct things such as "We should end the stigma on mental illness" rather than Katie Hopkins' "depression the ultimate passport to self obsession. Get a grip" has been able to buy 2 houses with their journalism 8/
Politically incorrect authors get away with repeating tired old metaphors and stereotypes. People who do proper research on, say, migration get hardly any airplay. That's how we end up with 40% of Brits saying migrants undermine British culture /ends theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/s…
