I was on a panel this weekend that continues to low-key upset me. First, another panellist described as “collaboration” a comics project where an artist was just given a bunch of prose short stories and expected to get on with it. (1/2)
Then the (male) artist said the hardest part of the book for him was drawing different sorts of women* because “IN COMICS WE ONLY HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO DRAW TWO WOMEN, MARY JANE AND AUNT MAY”

Me:
*by women he meant white women bc his book was 100% #FFFFFF

these were Big Important Literary / Cartooning People

2019 comics projects:

* weird, angry YA fantasy but w too much mom / family in it to be real YA, done as 6 quarterly 60-page ‘zines

* the Mayday sequel

* uh, another weird YA fantasy about Nonviolent Superman?

* a quarterly 72-100p art zine w 1 comics & 1 prose story / issue
* A very dark action comedy / Roadtrip of Vengance story I keep describing as “Martin McDonagh’s DIE HARD”

* And finally some cool WFH books and other comics-adjacent stuff not yet announced
About half the creator-owned stuff doesn’t have a publisher yet but YOLO, we’ll figure it out somehow, we always do

Oh, I’ve also got a super-creepy J-horror book that’ll be four super big ‘zines or just... a graphic novel. Prefer just a graphic novel.

At this moment I’d like to remind you of a frequent tactic of abusers when confronted with their actions:

DARVO = Deny, attack, reverse victim and offender.

Abusers are often extremely manipulative and self-loathing people who will do anything to blame others for their behaviour. They are the real victim!

If they can’t straight-up accuse their victims of lies, exaggeration, or vindictiveness— (2/3)
—thereby adding to the already high feelings of self-blame victims struggle with, they will blame LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE as to blame for their actions.

They’re especially fond of blaming things unable to fight back...

I hate that this needs to be posted, but here we go. The comic industry isn't dying. Sales aren't imploding. The most true thing about comics right now is that little has changed in the last 10-20 years. And that IS a problem... just not the problem we hear about. #comics /1
I completely get why some things are discouraging. Comics feel like they have changed a lot over the last ten years in particular, but in many ways comics have played it safe more than taken risks. But to a lot of readers the recent past is pretty disheartening. I get it. /2
Part of the problem is us. Me. You. We have access to a huge amount of content that 20-30 years ago was a bit harder to get. This means that amazing comics are at our beck and call whenever we want. It also means that the monthly crop of comics has no prayer of stacking up. /3

Cambodia has a rich modern history of pulp art, comics and graphic novels. Today in pulp I look at the Cambodian scene and at some of the artists who made - and continue to make - it happen.
Cambodian pulp art was initially influenced by the French comic strip style, and later by Indian movie posters and hindi comics. But it also maintains a strong folk-art tradition, melded with contemporary themes.
In the 1960s Cambodian artists were able to make a reasonable living illustrating both comics and book covers for the domestic market. Flower Of Love, Flame Of Suffering by Hak Chay Hok (Khmer Books) is a good example of the genre. The cover is by Hul Sophon.

Yesterday I talked about comic shops, and what more could be done to help. I wanted to THANK @Ssnyder1835, @GailSimone and @bryanedwardhill for their help in getting word out, and anyone please chime in with thoughts or arguments. Today I wanted to hit another topic... #comics /1
I mentioned yesterday that the number one “poison pill” for a book is silence. I have endless evidence to prove this statement, from @comichron and their numbers to the effect simple marketing and promotion does for a book. Noise helps. Silence hurts. Not exactly a new idea. /2
But (and here’s where I will get some argument I’m sure), one of the big themes of the last year has been the social media “presence” by creators, with a lot said about political or aggressive statements being a big turn off to readers. But that impact is very questionable. /3

Yesterday I discovered that I was getting more copies of Iceman than I ordered. I posted a short thread which led to a lot of good conversation. But I wanted to take a moment to really explain "overships" and how they work. Being smarter about the business helps everyone! /1
First, what are overships? Simply put, it's when you (as a retailer) order 5 copies of a title and the publisher sends you additional copies beyond what you order. The retailer DOES NOT pay for these other than the shipping cost. Usually the shipping costs are insignificant. /2
One exception to this is when (Marvel specifically) decides to overship 10%-15% of their line. Now you're talking about hundreds of dollars of additional shipping costs. But this hasn't happened in over a year, and knock on wood won't happen again as people revolted. /3
