How is poetry different than prose? Poetry has rhythm, lines & stanzas, more fluid, different structures, evocative instead of denotative, smaller chunks, distilled, ignores grammar rules etc… but all of these are part of prose as well. This is a toolbox.

Exercise: take a piece of your own fiction where you are stuck, take the sentence where you are stuck and write poetry from it. Reads a poem for inspiration and lets us go for 15 minutes.

So, there's a lot here.

I'm not a historian of the Civil War, so I'll defer to my colleagues who *do* specialize in that field to address Dinesh's claims about Robert E. Lee and the national institution of slavery.

Instead, I want to talk for a moment about the "cover up."
This "cover up" does not actually exist. When I was in high school, I learned, among other things, that the Republicans evolved out of the anti-slavery faction of the Whig Party, and that Abraham Lincoln was a Republican.
I also learned about Stephen Douglas and the Democratic Party.

I mean, the "Lincoln-Douglas" debate format is still pretty standard for high school debate teams. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln%E…

Here's a thread about notions of blackness, introverted insecurity, and a recent experience that transformed the way I see the world and myself in it:
I grew up in New Orleans in a middle class family in a two parent home. For a brief time, I went to a predominately African-American school where many of the students had experiences that I simply did not have. Many of them grew up in public housing, did not have fathers, etc.
As a result of parental influence I had been raised to value & deeply love education. I was considered to be a nerd by some. But others went further in their insults and accused me of acting "white" because I turned in assignments or was excited about them. (esp. English lit)

Alright! I've finished Bryan Caplan's The Case Against Education and it's definitely very interesting, although I remain unconvinced. This is gonna be real long, really more of a blog post, but I don't have a blog, soooo strap on in.

On a personal level I really love the signaling model. If you are not familiar, it's basically the idea that if you want to prove you have quality X, then you do wasteful and useless thing Y that someone WITHOUT X would have a harder time doing than you.
